The Importance of Photosynthesis and What it Does for Life Life according to scientists is “the condition that distinguishes animals and plants from inorganic matter, including the capacity for growth, reproduction, functional activity, and continual change preceding death, also the way of life of a human being or animal.”("Life,”) In order for one to have life, one must have the nine characteristics to be considered a living thing. These nine characteristics are; all living things are made up of cells, living things are able to reproduce, living thing use energy, maintain homeostasis, respond and adapt to the environment, grow and develop, have a life span, evolve over time, and are interdependence. All of the nine characteristics have one thing in common, something that is needed for all living things to use, even if they do not know it. This beautiful thing that all living things should value is photosynthesis. Without photosynthesis there wouldn’t consist humans, animals, insects, and most importantly life! What is Photosynthesis? According to scientists, photosynthesis is “the process by which green plants and some other organisms use sunlight to synthesize foods from carbon dioxide and water. Photosynthesis in plants generally involves the green pigment chlorophyll and generates oxygen as a byproduct.” ("pho•to•syn•the•sis,") What does Photosynthesis do for Living Things? Photosynthesis is a key contributor to all living things; photosynthesis provides the oxygen, food, and nutrients that help all living things stay healthy and alive. Photosynthesis converts solar energy into the chemical energy of a carbohydrate. We as a society should take care of our environment. We can recycle more, stop using harmful gases to produce the luxury that we take for granted, shelter the trees, get rid of cigarettes, use solar energy to power our houses, and clean up the garbage on the streets. Going green is the right thing to do, because it not only makes our environment look healthy, but helps us as a human race survive and live longer. Without photosynthesis there is no earth, we have take care of our environment not because it is the right thing to do, but just as we depend on photosynthesis for life, photosynthesis depend on us to survive!
The majority of life on Earth depends on photosynthesis for food and oxygen. Photosynthesis is the conversion of carbon dioxide and water into carbohydrates and oxygen using the sun’s light energy (Campbell, 1996). This process consists of two parts the light reactions and the Calvin cycle (Campbell, 1996). During the light reactions is when the sun’s energy is converted into ATP and NADPH, which is chemical energy (Campbell, 1996). This process occurs in the chloroplasts of plants cell. Within the chloroplasts are multiple photosynthetic pigments that absorb light from the sun (Campbell, 1996).

Plants use glucose as food for energy and as a building block for growing. The way plants turn water and carbon dioxide into sugar is called photosynthesis.
Photosynthesis is something that helps the plants to grow, but it is also very beneficial to us because of the fact that we need to breathe oxygen to maintain our functions of life. Plants produce an abundant supply of energy that is stored because they are what I would like to call savers/hoarders. Plants store the extra energy that they produce into different things such as potatoes, carrots, and other different types of food that we use to maintain our cellular respiration. Without photosynthesis it would be hard for animals to find fuel for cellular respiration and there would be no life as we know it due to photosynthesis being one of the key roles in life. Life as we recognize it requires specific conditions to exist. The most basic of these conditions include components needed by living creatures such as water, nutrients, an energy source, and the right atmosphere and climate. Humans need to breathe oxygen and can survive in moderate temperatures- not too cold and not too hot. The atmosphere is like the Earth’s blanket, keeping it warm and protected. Other planets that we know of do not have the same conditions as Earth, so if life were to be present on other planets they would be adapted to that planet’s unique environment. Living things on Earth have adapted to this planet’s atmosphere, therefore we need the specific composition of Earth’s atmosphere to survive.
