Bible in The Modern World

History holds many pieces of influential literature. These works have left such an impression in history that they continue to influence many aspects of life in modern culture, one being film. One of these pieces of literature, arguably one of the most influential, is the Bible. A plethora of movies and shows have been made as depictions of biblical scenes and narratives, however there have also been just as many films made that were less blatantly influenced by the Bible. One of these movies is the favorite Disney film "Lion King". While on face value, it doesn't seem to embody anything from the bible, if looked at a little closer, the film relates to a few biblical narratives.

It begins with both characters starting out as princes. Moses is a prince of Egypt and Simba is the prince of Pride Rock. Both Moses and Simba leave their royal positions, however, and run away from home. Additionally, they run away after a murder that they were somehow in relation to occurs. For Moses, it is soon after he kills a guard for whipping an Israelite slave. For Simba, it is right after his Uncle Scar blames him for his father’s death. So, to escape punishment for their actions. The two escape and find refuge in strange lands with a different crowd than where they came from. The biblical characters are prophets and kings. In the narratives of the people of Israel, it is not difficult to see the pattern of almost all the kings. All but a few are corrupted, and get Israel in a lot of trouble with God. They help lead Israel to destruction. The role of the prophets is not only to warn the people of the coming punishment, but to also give hope and advice on how to make things right in the future. When looking at the Lion King, Scar embodies the kings and Simba embodies the prophets. Scar is a corrupt figure, and once he becomes king, the land becomes more desolate and the food supply starts running out. This resembles how the Israelites were to be punished for corruption.
