A majority of teens and adults would prefer legal age requirements to be lower, but in reality they may not know how drastically it would impact people’s lives around the U.S. Laws that determine when we are adults and what we are allowed to do are in place to keep us safe, yet they are far from perfect. The age of adulthood should stay at 18, however the ages that responsibilities are granted should be different, corresponding to the level of responsibility required. Some of the main issues regard age to drink and smoke, age to drive, and age to gamble. The prevalent legal drinking and smoking age in the U.S. is set at 21 years, but this age is certainly debatable. Regardless what age the legal drinking age is set at, there will always …show more content…
Yet it is regarded as a leading cause of death. “In 2015, 2,333 teens in the United States ages 16–19 were killed and 235,845 were treated in emergency departments for injuries suffered in motor vehicle crashes. That means that six teens ages 16–19 died every day from motor vehicle injuries.”(CDC, Teen Drivers: Get the Facts). To put in perspective, whenever statistics are shown of people’s deaths, it is important to note that it affects others; 6 teens a day also means 6 families that are impacted by these deaths. “The law that passed in 2007 tightened nighttime driving curfews for 16- and 17-year-olds and required new drivers to wait a full year before they can carry more than one non-relative. The impact was immediate. In 2007 in Illinois, 155 teens between the ages of 16 and 19 died in automobile crashes. In 2008, that number fell to 92.” (Greenblatt, paragraph 25-26). This establishes that change would be effective because the change in accidents was cut by 41% so, why have we not acted? Young people are our future thus, it is important to protect …show more content…
A proper example is gambling; The age restriction for gambling is set at 18 in plenty of states. Helpguide.org gives out examples on how someone with a gambling problem may be feeling and one of the example was, “ You may gamble until you’ve spent your last dollar, and then move on to money you don’t have—money to pay bills, credit cards, or things for your children. You may feel pushed to borrow, sell, or even steal things for gambling money.”(Help Guide, Gambling Addiction and Problem Gambling). These are potential actions of gambling addicts that affect grown adult moreover, picture what effect it would have on a teen. A teen who is allowed to gamble risks getting addicted and that addiction may reach the point where they gamble all their tuition money away. Another poor choice that teens are vulnerable to is cigarette smoking. However, the repercussions of smoking take effect down the road in life. “Rarely are simple messages heard, such as the fact that about half of all smokers will die from smoking, and of these, about half will die before or around age 50.”(Wanjek, Smoking’s Many Myths Examined). It is important to stave young people from cigarettes for as long as possible because the risk of addiction is significantly higher; one cigarette could change someone’s life for the
This issue hit home for me because it puts many people at risk for things such as car accidents, binge drinking, alcoholism, depression, suicide, and rape, things no one should ever experience, let alone in middle or high school. These reasons are why the legal age to purchase, and consume alcohol should remain at 21 years of age.
The legal age to consume alcohol in our nation, The United States of America, is 21 years of age; although, it was previously allowed at the age of 18, when one is accepted in adulthood. The National Minimum Drinking Age of punished every state that allowed persons under 21 years of age to purchase and publicly possess alcoholic beverages
Teens today do things they know could get them into major trouble, such as going to parties, smoking and drinking. So why would people today want to have this problem, well it started when the age for drinking alcohol got raised to 21 years of age. Teens though that since the age was raised to such a high level and they could get married, sign contracts, join the army. That they could also drink, teens started going to parties then the drove home drunk so the law wouldn’t know, that they had been drinking (cons to the drinking age 10). The people thought that if they raised the age of drinking, drinking would go down and less accidents would happen. Well that didn’t go as planned it help in some states. Others the law has not really helped. Some states have made a proposal to lower the drinking age, all are similar , but different one state in particular to lowering the age is Missouri. As G.K. Chesterton said “The free man owns himself. He can damage himself with either eating or drinking;he can ruin himself with gambling. If he does he is certainly a fool and he might possibly be a damned soul;but if he may not, he is not a free man anymore than a dog.” So lowering the drinking age would make people free to damage yourselves.
Just like the teenage boy that died in the wreck, most young teen drivers think they are invincible and are owners of the road which is all due to lack of maturity. The mind set of young drivers now days is “I’m too young to die”, or “it wont happen to me” and they are so blinded by the immature thinking that it gets them in trouble. Some traits generally linked with the immaturity are: chance taking, testing limits, poor-decision making, overconfidence, speeding, following to closely, and dangerous passing (Williams). When you have youthful age and immature characteristics combined the crash possibility is enlarged. The 15-16 age groups are among the most accident prone of most groups (“Don’t”), so why then would we want them behind the wheel? “Most U.S. states license at age 16, but the minimum age for a regular license is 14 in South Dakota and 15 in five other states including: Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, and South Carolina”, stated Allan F. Williams. Youthful age and immature thinking is part of the reason wh...
Introduction: The legal drinking age in America is 21, in the past it differed by state ranging from 18, 19 to 20. Through the years it’s changed and after the Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984 where it went from 18 to 21 and stayed there. Throughout the years it has gone back and forth with discussion.
The debate over whether the minimum legal drinking age has been going on for years. People have their own opinions on what the age should be set at and their reasons. There are many reasons why people say it should be eighteen, and there are many reasons why people say it should be twenty-one. It could be possible that change could have serious consequences. The legal drinking age should remain at 21.
As everyone knows, the current legal drinking age in the united states is twenty-one years old. Although the legal age is twenty-one years old, the Missouri University of Science and Technology’s Residence Hall Guide clearly states that possession and use of alcohol is prohibited. If alcohol or any related article is found, it will be apprehended and discarded.
Did you know that in the year 1980 the legal drinking age was only 18? In 1987 there was a law passed that said in order to drink legally and to buy alcohol a person had to be 21. At the age of 18 people are allowed to buy tobacco, vote, get married without parental consent, and even join the armed forces, so why can’t someone who is 18 drink alcohol? This is a question I have; I believe that the legal drinking age should be 18. Dr. Ruth Engs, a professor of Applied Health Sciences at Indiana University, agrees with me also.
When lawmakers in the United States set the drinking age to twenty-one, it was not only to prevent teens from making destructive decisions, but also to avoid serious health issues. Once an adolescent begins to drink, a number of potential health risks can occur. When adolescents consume alcohol, they
According to “Traffic Safety Facts” written by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a “27% decrease” of driver fatalities were reported. There were 2,123 fewer 15-20- year- olds involved in fatal crashes. At age 15, most teenagers have taken the proper precautions to getting their learner’s permit or are learning how to drive. In 1998, 8,000 drivers were involved and within the next 10 years it would soon decrease by over 2,000. So whatever is going
Every day, many teens participate in a potentially deadly activity; they get behind the wheel of a car. According to research, driving is one of the most dangerous things a teen can do. A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration federal study showed that motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for young people aged 15 to 20. New Jersey is the state with least fatal car accidents. There are two parts to this argument, but the US and everyone should follow New Jersey’s policy for a number of different reason. One of the reasons and the most important being, safety, although it’s wrong to assume every teenager is the same.
If asked most teens would say that they don’t think of the consequences their driving could bring, because if they had then the statistics of fatalities due to car accidents would not be so high. In 1997, according to the US Department of Transportation, 7,885 teens were involved in fatal crashes. They also claim that teen crashes are 4 times the normal rate of accidents. These accidents are occurring because teens tend to take more risks. They drive too fast and usually aren’t paying attention to the r...
Eighteen year olds have learned to use precaution in driving from their peers and teachers to get a greater knowledge about the road. According to the National Highway Safety Administration said, "The rate of crashes per mile driven for sixteen year old drivers is almost ten times the rate for adults" (1). Indicating that adults are more responsible who are also precaution on the road then young adults. As a matter of fact, all fifty states prohibit youth from drinking alcohol, buying cigarettes, and purchasing handguns (4). But they are giving them a potentially deadly weapon, a car. Some parents believe that drinking alcohol, buying cigarettes, and purchasing handguns are going to harm their children. Not to mention, they do not know is that letting teenagers under eighteen drive an automobile without responsibility and precaution is
The current U.S. system of laws surrounding the legal age of responsibility has failed us. It is not built with today’s society in mind. Teens today are pressured to grow up faster than ever while every teen develops maturity differently. Society should change the system of legal responsibility to honor the individual development of each person rather than by an arbitrary age. We should change it so the age of adulthood in our country is determined by the ability of a person to prove that they are mature by driving, paying bills, holding a job or attending college instead of by arbitrary laws and set numbers. The system should change in order to have a more equitable judgement for the age of responsibility.
Sixteen year olds have a higher crash rate than drivers of any other age. “ in 2011, teenagers accounted for 10 percent of motor vehicle crash deaths” (Teen Driving Statistics). For this purpose, Many states have begun to raise the age limit by imposing restrictions on sixteen years old drivers. For example, limiting the number of passengers they can carry while driving. “The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety released a report in May 2012 that showed that the risk of 16- or 17-year old drivers being killed in a crash increases with each additional teenage passenger in the vehicle. The risk increases 44 percent with one passenger; it doubles with two passengers, and quadruples with three or more passengers. The study analyzed crash data and the number of miles driven by 16- and 17-year olds” (Teen Driving Statistics). Another example, is that many people believe that teenage drivers have a race boy/girl mentality. This mean that when any teenager gets into a vehicle of any kind they get some type of thrilled or that the driving laws do not accommodate them in any way, shape, or form. They would go drag race ...
