In 2012 the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) results showed that the eight Latin American countries participating in the assessment (out of 65) scored in the bottom third for reading, math, and science. (4) These findings indicate that the quality of education in Latin America is quite low and unequally spread throughout each individual country. There are many obstacles that add to this problem such as social circumstance, lack of government involvement, and poorly trained teachers. On the contrary, much can be done to turn this around.

Bustillo provides ideas for how to better cater to this issue. First, educators should receive scripted lessons so as to keep the material universal and constant. This will provide teachers with knowledge on how to instruct their students through improved communication.
Second, children should be assigned more reading time throughout the week. This would involve time for reading in class and also at home. Of course, this cannot be done without the presence tailored reading materials. Bustillo’s third recommendation is that early leaners should be reading books with large letters, proper spacing, maybe a few pictures, but most importantly they must have access to textbooks or workbooks with a plethora of practice activities.
Finally, parents need to become more involved in their child’s education. For student of the middle-low classes this is more difficult as their parents may not have the luxury of extra time.
