Jose Marti (1853-95) ranks among one of most revolutionary writers to ever come out of Latin America. Most of his writings have Cuba as the subject matter as it is his country of birth. It was on this island that he came face to face with the oppressive measures that the Spanish colonial administration was imposing on its subjects. These abuses sparked a fire in him that was impossible to extinguish, and he soon decided to stand firm in fighting for the emancipation of the Antillean people and his country. In scholarly circles, he is also known as a revolutionary in literature with many prominent writers lauding him for giving expression to nascent emotions and ideas of modernizing the whole world. It was during his stint as leader of the Cuban Revolutionary Party that he was most vocal about political freedom and cultural independence with his Our America being his best-known poem on this rhetoric. It also serves as an essay on nationalism for (Latin) America while pointing out the flaws that were inherent in the system of government imposed.
