Good schools encourage parents to be involved. Parents are important just like the student. “The school plays an important role in determining the levels of parental involvement in school. Specifically, schools can outline their expectations of parents and regularly communicate with parents about what children are learning” (NEA, p.2, 2011). NEA reviews of research also explains, “also, schools can provide opportunities for parents to talk with school personnel about parents ' role in their children 's education through home visits, family nights, and well-planned parent-teacher conferences and open houses.” When everyone takes the time to work together as a team, it makes things a lot easier for the
Parents are the key stakeholders that are essential for providing a fostering and engaging environment for their children. According to me, they are the support system the children need before any type of schooling takes place. They must be a willing participant in the growth of their children, so the transition will not be as difficult when they begin school. Ultimately, as they get older and begin school, the responsibility is shared between parents and the key stakeholders within the school system. According to the article, “Building Parent-Teacher Relationships,” positive engagement between the school and parents influences positive behavior and action from the parents to become more involved in their child 's education (American Federation, 2007).
Giving parents the opportunity to volunteer in the classroom is a benefit for teachers, parents, and children. The teacher is able to illustrate the classroom activities while the parent is in the classroom. Any ideas or questions that the parent may have at the end of the session could provide innovative ideas that the teacher could implement in the curriculum. Children are able to see their parents participate in their educational studies which motivates students to improve their behavior and achieve higher grades which in turn could lead to better opportunities in career and personal life. As a parent, being involved in the life of your child’s education could inspire children to be doctors, lawyers, politicians, etc.
For a teacher to properly educate a student they need to know them in all developmental areas which includes parents, because of the crucial role they play in their child’s growth and development. By having the parents involved they can work with the teacher to come up with a curriculum that best suits the student. Involving parents in their child’s education benefits the student, parents, and the teacher because there will be an abundance of support for the child’s education. By involving the parents they are able to help the child out of school which will help to keep them on track with their education. I believe with both the support from the teacher and the parents that a student is more likely to grow and develop into a successfully educated person.
It is going to be extremely important to get the student’s parents involved in their education, and have teachers to create a working relationship with them. By following these steps, students and culturally diverse parents can feel that they are welcomed into their child’s education system. Parents, will try to become more involved and participative it heir child’s education. They need to have a place where they can talk about their frustrations, needs, and successes as well as the needs of their children.
It also states that inclusion and support of parents and the connections with the community is important to the children’s learning process. Moreover Te Whᾱriki states that “Parents and caregivers have a wealth of valuable information and understandings regarding their children” (30). Thirdly both approach focus on educators to provide encouragement, warmth, and acceptance. They also provide challenges for creative and complex learning and thinking, helping children to extend their ideas and actions through sensitive, informed, well-judged interventions and support. Te Whᾱriki principles points out “children learn through responsive and reciprocal relationships with people, places and things” (p. 14).
Statement of Philosophy – Working with Families and Communities Decades of research proves partnerships between schools and families not only enhance children’s learning and achievement, it is also mutually beneficial to the families and educators. As an early childhood educator, my philosophy is rooted in establishing and maintaining a strong and effective partnership with families and communities that can help children and their families thrive. My approach focuses on effective communication between family and school, respect for diversity, and promoting learning at home. Effective Communication Effective communication is the foundation to building a trusting partnership and serves as a first step to other types of parent involvement . Families who receive consistent information about their children 's school performance, have a higher degree of commitment to helping children improve .When families and schools are on the same page, they can have a more concrete discussion around student progress to establish realistic goals and plans to support student achievement .
The most common and long-term place to find this support is within their family. This is why I have decided to become a teacher at the pre-school/ head start level. I feel that it is very important, during this age, for the teacher to involve the parents in the learning process as much as possible. As I continue to develop as a professional, I would like to pursue a master’s degree and eventually become the director of an integrated pre-school/ head start program. With this position, I would be able to develop programs to help the families learn skills needed to help themselves which will, in turn, help the child.
One of my hopes as an education major student is for students to feel the love in my future classroom. I think each child is unique, and each child deserves educational opportunities. I believe a teacher is a profession that requires patience, knowledge, communication skill, and social skill. The teacher also needs to enjoy the interaction with children, and be able to show them the importance of education and respecting and caring for others. Other professional responsibilities include providing several different ways to present the lesson to cover each student’s most beneficial learning style.
Finally, parents may collaborate with educators to construct academic objectives that are best suitable for their child. According to Chapter 2, parents may play a crucial role in supporting their child’s cognitive advancement. In order to motivate students to achieve at the highest level, it is essential that parents nourish their children with adequate nutrition and help them with their school assignments (e.g., projects, reports, and homework) (p. 24, Chapter 2). Consequently, parents positively effective their child’s cognitive development as they may assist in increasing their academic achievement (p. 24).
