The theme of love is widely and deeply explored both in Chekhov’s ‘a lady with a dog’ and in Lawrence’s ‘The horse dealer’s daughter’. In both stories the protagonists undergo a journey of self discovery to find love. In both stories its’ fascinating to see the characters develop as they undergo a transformation finding purpose and falling in love, while at the same time they try to disconnect from their intolerable and dull pasts. Love comes in many shades and viewed from totally different perspectives and that what makes the stories so interesting and creates suspense which draws the reader right in. This paper will discuss how the main characters lived prior to finding love and how their lives were later changed.

The turning point occurs when Dmitry realizes that he is restless and cannot live without seeing Anna again, so he decides to travel to her home town against all odds and try to win her heart. At first Dmitry is confused and does not know for certain if he has fallen for Anna as he never loved anyone before. After meeting her they establish that she would come to visit him in Moscow occasionally and Dmitry adjusts to a sort of a new life, a secret life that is valuable to him while his public life is worthless and means little. Dmitry learns so see things through Anna’s eyes and that really enhances their connection. Does their love bring them satisfaction? ,who knows, but they are so into each other that it no longer matters as they greatly suffer while being apart. One of the morals would be that we don’t choose who we love. The story is open ended as the readers can decide for themselves the fate of the two lovers. H. Lawrence, are set on a journey to find love and happiness in places they never expected, this resembles Chekhov’s story. Their lives are dull and meaningless until they find love in the strangest of ways. Mabel feels that her life is empty after her mother dies and that nothing could fill that void. All she had left was her house and possessions and when it was taken away Mabel slowly becomes more depressed to the point when she looses her identity and turns suicidal, she decides to end her life by drowning in the pond. As there was nothing between Jack and Mabel up until then they were just strangers to each other. Jack viewed Mable as a patient in despair when he rescued her only later to realize his feelings for her. His life was also dull before that day and nothing of meaning has happened to him, he was a workaholic who had no joy in his life. He did not know what love was and feared the unknown feeling and was very suppressed. His only stimulation was to provide care for
