It also focuses on integrating theory with practice, facilitating the cultivation of students' hands-on ability, improving student integrated capacity. The second focus in the University of Charleston’s mission statement is enlightened living (Ucwv.edu, Mission. 2018). The University defines enlightened living is defined as “having a broad range of knowledge in such subjects as economy, politics, art, literature, history, values, moral purpose, and personal character (Ucwv.edu, Mission. 2018). Being involved in the campus at UC helped me to learn about enlightened living. Even though LLOs are normally applied to class I feel that the UC incorporates them into everything they do. “To create an effective environment where students can learn to live enlightened lives they must be taught the rights and responsibilities associated with social, political and economic communities” (Ucwv.edu, LLO. 2018).
The view of what college is and what the experience of college offers, differ dramatically between an individual and the society he or she lives. College has traditionally been viewed as the place young adults go to find themselves, find their career, and start their adult lives. Some have argued that education has veered too far away from tradition, while others argue that the whole idea of Liberal Education needs to keep evolving to meet the demands of the modern world. Those in favor of change argue for more diversity within the curriculum, such as more non-western world education and feminist thought. However, the traditional educational ideal has not completely vanished. At the majority of colleges in America the Liberal Arts, or General Education, is the core requirement that every student must take regardless of major. A liberal education studies the idea of what it means to be a good human being. The Liberal Arts are important to everyone because it tries to grasp each individual’s uniqueness and find their place in society. These classes aim to challenge students to become better people, better citizens, and overall create a better society. Liberal Arts try to grasp the knowledge and skills humans have used to rationally understand human existence for thousands of years. By creating culturally diverse campuses and studying topics like philosophy; students learn to question life, question society, and find answers to what it means to be a good person. All of these innovations together along with better informed and intelligent students help form societies focused on equality and the future of human civilization.

Social value of college comes from every interaction a college student has with other student and the faculty of the college, and how they deal with the everyday stress of college. In my experience, there is a great social and cultural value of college and everyone should at least try to experience just a little of these values for themselves.
The type of education portrayed by the university is influenced by the international community. It gives students the chance to be inspired by different opportunities, like internships and clubs, to enhance the specialization of their degree of study. This makes the student more goal-orientated towards an education that will make them valuable and versatile for whatever job market they walk in to. As stated by the mission statement, this college will strive to, “Pursue opportunities to enhance personal wellness through artistic, athletic, or recreational activities,” and to “develop an infrastructure that makes learning accessible to those on campus and in our community and supports the scholarly activities of the faculty.”
Diversity in a university is so important. First of all “diversity enriches the educational experience”. Students are able to learn from one another’s experiences. Also diversity helps maturity through most students. With diversity, students are able to learn about the other people’s experiences and are able to break down the stereotypical “walls” that our country has built. While students are breaking down these stereotypical “walls”, students will be able to effectively communicate with others of various backgrounds. Parents and community members want to know that their contributions towards the campus are valued and appreciated. Many times we take for granted those events occurring around us. It is crucial we express gratitude towards those people investing in increasing student achievement. Stakeholders want to feel accepted and worthy in their contributions to the campus. In addition, communities are made up of different types of culture, race and income status making the culture diverse which may act as a barrier in creating a positive atmosphere. Yet, this type of misunderstanding can be avoided by simply asking questions in a respectful manner. School leaders must make parent and community involvement a priority, valuing and accepting each other’s differences. “Schools provide wonderful opportunities to bring together students, families, educators and other community members to build the collaborative partnerships that promote quality educational, recreational, and social opportunities for all citizens” (Lechtenberger and Mullins, 2004, p. 21). Recently, whether because of the self-seeking need to increase the client-base or from the moral perspective that equal opportunity applies to both employees and students, educational facilities have moved away from appealing to the typical college student and faculty. Attention has shifted to broaden the scope to all who desires a higher education and faculty that demonstrate the competency to teach the students. Diversity in higher education means providing equal opportunities regardless of race, gender, religious preferences, and sexual orientation for both students and staff.
