Julius Caesar was the last leader of the Roman Republic. It is debated whether or not Caesar was a successful leader, however his influences on society then and society now are impossible to deny. Caesar is still relevant in modern society due to his tremendous influence on culture, language, military and political tactics, invention of a modern calendar, and his iconic representation of the Roman Empire.
One of Caesar’s long-lasting accomplishments is the innovation of a new language and a new calendar. Caesar was very interested in codes such as the Morse code and Pig Latin, but he was credited with inventing the code of Caesar Substitution Cipher (Codes and Ciphers). In this code, every letter of the message is replaced with the letter three places down in the alphabet (A would be replaced by D, etc.). This code is often used to write messages that could be easily intercepted during warfare. He was also a very talented writer; some of his works being the “Gaelic War” and the “Civil War”, which were names Caesar’s War Commentaries. These commentaries are still read today in order to gain a first-hand account of the wars, as they were originally pages that he wrote in his diary while he was fighting. Caesar is also often quoted today. His last words were “Et tu, Brute?” which translates from Latin to “You too, Brutus”. This phrase was always known to be his last words, but Shakespeare made them famous by writing a play named “Caesar”, which featured the exact words he said. Shakespeare’s play made Caesar quite popular, and most likely led to the interesting correlation between his unique name and the very popular salad dressing. ...certainly would have taken some of the lessons from Julius Caesar in his lifetime, Caesar helped shape one of the most widespread and popular religions today.
Caesar is affecting one’s everyday life whether they know it or not. Each time one sees the King of Diamonds in a deck of cards, they are looking at Caesar. Each time one puts Caesar salad dressing on a fresh pile of cheese and lettuce, they are helping to carry on Caesar’s name. If one is a Christian, or follows the teachings and philosophy of Jesus Christ, they are following Caesar’s teachings as well. Julius Caesar is still very relevant in today’s society, and without the innovations and his long-lasting impacts on culture, language, military and political tactics, invention of a modern calendar, modern Christianity, and iconic representation of the Roman Empire, the world today would be much different.
