Jules Demersseman was a French flautist and composer. He was born on January 9, 1833, in Hondschoote, a small town in the north of France near the border of present-day Belgium. When he was eleven years old, he studied flute at the Paris Conservatory in 1844 under the tutelage of Jean-Louis Tulou. He received a series of prizes from Paris Conservatory and became a teacher, soloist, and composer upon graduation. Demersseman became friends with Adolphe Sax and started composing saxophone music under Sax’s influence, becoming one of the first French composers to write music for the newly developed saxophone. John Birks, also known as “Dizzy Gillespie” was born October 21,1917. He grew up in Cheraw, South Carolina. Gillespie was the youngest of his nine siblings. Gillespie’s father was a bandleader as well as a bricklayer. His father died when he was only ten years of age. Several years after his father passed away Dizzy Gillespie became a self-taught trombone and trumpet player (“David”). His skills increased so much over time that he later learned how to play the cornet. Gillespie had a special talent for playing these instruments. He was enrolled into the Laurinburg Institute of North Carolina in 1932. The school told him that they wanted him to play for their band. During his time at the school, he practiced his instruments mostly by himself.

Chuck Mangione is perhaps one of the best jazz musicians, and flugel player of his time. Chuck Mangione was born in Rochester, New York on November 29, 1940. Right from the start he was in a musical family. They were visited by many jazz musicians, including Dizzy Gillespie, and Cannonball Adderley! Chuck began his childhood career by playing trumpet, he even practiced with Dizzy and referred to him as his “musical father”. Later on, Dizzy was so impressed with Chuck’s ability, that he gave him one of his own upswept trumpets. Later on, Chuck continued his musical career in Eastman School of Music.
This is a small biography about the popular Dutch professional alto sax player Candy Dulfer. She is more of a modern professional alto sax player that started playing around 1974, and plays smooth jazz and funk. Unlike T.K. Blue she had more of a natural talent and didn’t go to a music school. She has really strong pipes and plays the alto saxophone loud and proud. When listening to her music I thought she would be another great example of pushing the limits, the alto saxophone has no limits. You would never think of the alto saxophone playing any other types of music other than jazz, but it all depends on the passion and determination. Especially when you see a woman that’s playing the musical instrument. Most people think that the alto saxophone is a man’s instrument; when I was in a school band there were only me and on other female alto saxophone player out of the eight of us. “Davis worked on developing the improvisational style that defined his trumpet playing” (biography.com). Davis made music in several jazz eras and had a major influence on jazz eras such as bebop, hard bop and even fusion. Davis was not always an amazing player. For example, when he was playing in Charlie Parker’s band, Davis had many technical difficulties. Davis had issues such as playing too tentatively, finding the right pace, and performing powerful solos at the beginning, but that all changed after experience and time performing on stage. After playing with Parker’s band, Davis gained experience and confidence in his own music and performance which lead to him organizing a nine piece band with instruments such as the French horn, trombone and tuba, which became a major addition to modern jazz. This band then released the album “Birth of the Cool” (Biography.com). This was major because not only did Davis form a band with unique types of instrumentation, he even released a successful album with this band which influenced other artists that other instrumentation can be used in jazz music at the time. During this time period, Davis also went to Europe to perform at the Paris Jazz festival in 1949. When you hear the instrument, “clarinet” which person do you think of? Lots of people try to be funny and answer Squidward from Spongebob Squarepants but who really were the super stars of this well-known instrument? There are many clarinet players out there that had a lot of great master pieces and who made very important achievements with this instrument. One of these famous clarinet players was a man named Johann Simon Hermstedt. Johann Simon Hermstedt was one of the many well-known clarinet players of the 19th century. Hermstedt was born on December 29 of 1778 and he died on August 10 of 1846 in Sondershausen, Germany. Hermstedt also played an important part in Germany, when he lived in Germany, he played as court clarinetist to Duke Gunther I of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen, and he also taught him how to play the clarinet. Another clarinet player named Louis Spohr’s used to play concerts and he played four concerts along with Carl Maria von Weber, played all pieces that were composed by Hermstedt. These two clarinet players were very dedicated to his work and his life; they were very inspired by his way of playing. Hermstedt was pretty much a bit of a composer himself, he wrote various pieces of music for other wind instrument players but he’s not as famous as Mozart and all other composers, he was more of a conservative player.
The Alto Saxophone is a single-reed musical instrument that was invented in 1846 by Antoine-Joseph (Adolphe) Sax. Adolphe Sax was born on November 6, 1814 in Dinant, Belgium. During his childhood, he studied the clarinet and flute at Brussel’s Conservatory. His father was a renowned maker of musical instruments during that time. Since Adolphe grew up with his father making instruments and studying the clarinet and the flute, it was obvious that he would end up following in his father’s footsteps. The first instrument that Adolphe decided to look at was the bass clarinet; he wanted to improve the tone of the instrument. He came up with a single-reed instrument constructed from metal that had a conical bore and overblew at the octave, which translates to the saxophone.

Deresiewicz ask how you can have so many friends and yet none at all. He considers friends on social media a simulacra. Achille-Claude Debussy was one of the most renowned French composers who stimulated the music of the twentieth-century. Debussy’s life experiences have given an emotional and relatable truth in his work. Works such as Clair de Lune, Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune, and La Mer are great achievements of Debussy that are the most familiar today. Debussy is worth reviewing because he uniquely structured his compositions that served as a base for musicians in the past, and will easily continue to motivate musical masterpieces for years to come.
John Coltrane was a jazz saxophonist from 1955 to 1967. He was born in Hamlet, North Carolina on September 23, 1926. A few years later he moved to Highpoint, North Carolina.(D) As a child he was surrounded by a musical family. When he turned thirteen he started to play the alto saxophone. 1939 was a life changing year for Coltrane because his father, uncle, and grandparents died.(C) In the middle of that same year he graduated from grammar school.(D) Sadly when his family started to split and go to different states Coltrane moved to Philadelphia in 1943.(C)
Many of his influences came to him when he was very young in his private, home-life. His primary influence was his father, who was an amateur musician. His father would have some friends over and they would casually play music all the time. His father sparked his interest in music. The first instrument he learned to play was the cello, which later he modified to learn the viola. Later in his teens, he learned to play the guitar. Duke Ellington was a popular jazz musician of the 1920s and beyond his music impacted how future musicians will play. He wrote 2000 to 3000 songs in his career and published over 200 albums. Ellington played the piano, alto and tenor saxophone along with being a bandleader. Duke Ellington became such a famous jazz player because his music was diverse, he toured the world with “The Washingtonians” and he won multiple awards that helped him spread his name across the globe.
By the time senior year starts, many students are already looking towards the future. Countless are sending in applications to colleges they wish to attend while others are closing in on jobs they wish to acquire once school is over. As senior year comes to an end, students have already had to make tough decisions that will potentially affect their lives permanently. No matter which path is chosen, it is clear that these decisions will help prepare the students for the real world.
Constance Meyer states in the Los Angeles Times, “It [the saxophone] was invented in the 1840s by the Belgian Adolphe Sax for military bands and orchestral use.” Although the saxophone is still used in orchestras and military bands, today most people associate the saxophone with jazz music. The saxophone is one of the many symbols of jazz and has become popular through jazz. Players such as Charlie Parker and John Coltrane became famous playing jazz music on the saxophone. Saxophones are used in many types of music because they produce a sound that goes well with other instruments and can be played with any style of music. Saxophonist and composer Tommy Smith states in his own words the extent of a saxophone’s musical range. “The saxophone's sonic possibilities are limitless, like an aural kaleidoscope. Its sound inspires sensuality but it but [sic] can rock out and scream with anger and frustration.”
