Blood-Burning Moon, Fern, Esther; these are just some of the stories by Jean Toomer in his first book Cane. Cane is a collection of short stories and poems published by Toomer in 1923. In this collection he takes us through the true experiences of black lives as they really were. He words have painted a picture so clearly for many. Even the late Maya Angelou is quoted as saying “A breakthrough in prose and poetical writing….This book should be on all readers’ and writers’ desks and in their minds.” Toomer shows how Southern life is seen through visions of smoke, sugarcane, dusk, and fire; while the Northern world is seen as a harsher reality of asphalt streets. Which is why Cane is considered a masterpiece about African-American life. Jean Toomer was an American poet, novelist, and an important figure of the Harlem Renaissance and modernism. He was an biracial African-American; which is why in most photographs of him he appears white. Though he didn't want to be labeled an African-American author just simply an author.
