Across the globe, the game of basketball is one of the most popular and widely played sports. It's played by two-hundred and fifty-million people in one-hundred and ten different countries that all share the same love of the game. Nothing can compare to Basketball. The history of the game, the excitement it brings and what it has done for so many people, are things that make basketball a great sport. The history instilled in the game of basketball over many years has come to be a very interesting topic to learn about. The man who invented the game is Dr. James Naismith. Naismith’s first ideas for a game like this came while he was working in a YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts and wanted a sport for people to play there during the winter months. “He wrote the 13 simple rules, nailed up two peach baskets, and rolled out a ball. From there, the rest was history” (Faurschou 2). “The first official game took place January 20, 1892” (Faurschou 1). There are many stories of players who started out with nothing, and were poor in their childhood but then became good at a game they loved. A famous basketball player Kevin Durant once said in an interview “How can i lose when i came here with nothing” (Young 1). His quote is an example of how basketball has changed his life and so many others because before he was poor and had nothing but now the game has changed that for him. “Basketball is an escape. It gives them a chance to succeed in life. Whether that chance is just allowing them to dream big, giving them a chance to go to college on a Scholarship, or even becoming a professional.
