The object of basketball is to shoot the basketball through the opposing team’s basket and to out-score them by end of the regulation time limit. If the score is tied at this time, the game will go into overtime until one team wins. While reading about basketball, I found it interesting that when the sport was invented they would nail baskets to balconies with no backboards. This made it easy for spectators (in the balcony) to help their team by either swatting the
Before we plunge into the vast world of basketball, you need to understand where, and how America’s beloved sport began! The first official game of basketball was played in a cramped YMCA gymnasium in Albany, New York on January 20, 1892, but the concept was conceived in a small gym, back in 1891. A Canadian sports coach named James Naismith was in desperate search of a new sport to keep his gym active during rainy days, when he decided to nail a peach basket to his elevated track and write the basic rules for the game, however, he never knew that his new and simple pastime would soon rise to become one of the most highly regarded sports in America.

In fact it is the only major sport that can be considered American-made (Encyclopedia.com, Basketball). James Naismith created basketball while he was a physical education teacher a t the YMCA. He was challenged to make an indoor game for cold Canadian winters in which outdoor games could not be played. While James Naismith was in the process of making his game he observed other sports to take good qualities from those sports. After two weeks of working on his sport he was finally finished. The game was quickly enjoyed by many physical education students at the YMCA. The first game was played with two peach baskets and a soccer ball. The main object was to score more baskets than your opponent by the end of the game. Originally the game was played with fifteen minute halves and a break in between. Now a day’s different organizations do different times and set ups. For example the NBA plays four twelve minute quarters with a break at the half but on the other hand the NCAA plays two twenty minute halves. But, this is not the only way the game evolved after 10 years a backboard came into play a wooden board the sat behind the hoop with the opponent could bounce they shots against to get a basket for their team. Shortly after that the basketball net was invented. It was used so that the ball could go through the hoop and at the same time slow down the shot so that the ball didn’t fly too far away. Before the use of the net every time a basket was made the opposing team would have to climb up and get the ball down.

His first idea was to bring soccer and lacrosse inside, however that was too physical. He finally thought of an old childhood game he used to play called duck-on-the-rock. This game gave him the idea of a new game called basket ball. It wasn’t the exact game he played, although the method was similar. The game required a soccer ball, two peach baskets
