When Jack London states “I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet,” he is saying to be an awesome person, be amazing rather than being a boring person and believe in yourself, extreme sports in life. He’s also saying try the extreme sports maybe you’ll like it. Jack London is claiming that you have took a risk in your life and you can decide to do anything you want in life.
Jack London is also saying take chances you have and want in life, and he’s a well known author. He’s written a great story about risk takers and how they choose to do them, and others choose to other risk taking. During the turn of the 19th century, a grandiose shift occurred in literature from realism to naturalism form of writing. One of the many authors involved in this movement included Jack London. London developed his short stories collection, Son of the Wolf, around this theme. In a Far Country is a short story in Son of the Wolf collection in which London talks about two lethargy men, Cater Weatherbee and Percy Cuthfert, who come from different realms of life. They are on a journey to the North near the Yukon River in Alaska searching for gold. On their way, they decide to abandon their team and live in a cabin during the Arctic winter. In the beginning, the two men cooperate by staying hygienic and conserving food. But over time they start experiencing a sense of insecurity with each other. They discontinue staying clean, saving food, and keeping order. Overtime they face physical and more importantly emotional breakdown. The disintegration between the two men eventually leads each of them into killing the other over sugar (par. 1-76). By elaborating on the physical and psychological struggle alongside nature’s indifference in the wilderness, London illustrates the superficial cooperation and contention between human beings in a civilization.
John Griffith London, better known to us as Jack London, was born to Flora Wellman January 12, 1876, in San Francisco. (Ranch Album) His father was presumably W.H. Chaney, who left Flora after finding out she was pregnant. (Stasz, 9) Flora met and eventually married John London on September 7, 1876 bringing John's two other children, Ida and Eliza, into the family. (Ranch Album) Flora enlisted the help of a wet nurse and, with the help her and Eliza, Jack London was raised. For the next ten years, John and his family relocated several times within California, moving from farm to farm trying to become financially successful. (Marshall) Finally, the London family moved to Oakland where Jack began to attend school. At the age of eleven, Jack was put to work to help support the family due to his father's business failures. (Stasz, 19-28) This began what would be many years of odds and ends jobs for Jack.
I have seen this quote many times before and it has always stood out to me. It makes you rethink a lot of your choices in your life. It makes you want to go out and do something crazy. It doesn’t even have to be that but it should just inspire you to go out and experience life and all it has to offer.
Helen Keller once said “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all”. Chris McCandless believed in this thought. However, Chris’s “daring adventure” also cuased his quick demise. People risk their lives for many reasons. Perhaps a person is suicidal or maybe they are foolish and ill prepared. I believe many people, including Chris McCandless, risk their lives for an adventure because life is short, and why not take risks while a person still can. Or on the contrary, a person could be seeking a thrill, or attempting to test their worth, or simply trying to decide who they really are.

In both accounts of their San Francisco Earthquakes authors Mark Twain and Jack London both describe the effect of nature on the entire population that has been touched by it’s destructive grasp. London focuses on the inevitable demise society's attempt to conquer nature with technological innovations and societal expansions. Twain targets the vulnerability of the human population in times of hardship and the impetuous decisions that come from this.
The slot is a metaphor of the “class cleavage of society”. There was a contrast between the North and South of the Slot in terms of building types: in the North were the higher-class centers of diversion, lodging, and business; and in the South were the lower-class centers of lodging, unskilled work/business. As a result of his fierce competition against them, by the 6th day FD doubles his earnings. He misunderstands their lack of loyalty to the business, and looks down on them. Being unable to convince Drummond, and as a last resort, his co-workers jumped on him and attacked him so badly that he becomes ill. Once recovered, Drummond changes job. He finds himself working as a fruit-distributor among the women and decides not to change their work conditions. In six months, Drummond works at many jobs, and succeeds in imitating a genuine worker. Before becoming one of the most inspirational authors of all time, Jack London lived a hard and enduring life. However, the struggles he faced did not stop him from doing what we loved most. The struggles he faced made him an influential writer. Writing books was Jack’s favorite hobby. He made a living out of doing it. Jack London did more than simply writing in this world. Jack’s most famous book was “The Call of the Wild”. Jack London contributed to the world by changing literature,fighting for women's rights, and supporting african-american rights.
