Hip-hop music is my favorite genre of music because the way I grew up I can relate to a lot of the things it portrays. I also enjoy R&B and gospel music because it is what listened to as a child. Some hip-hop artist I enjoy are Fabulous, Andre 3000 and T.I. because a lot of their music tells a story and gives life lessons. J Cole is my favorite hip-hop artist because he makes great music, he is a philanthropist and he uses his platform to speak and act on social issues. Of course, everyone has their own opinion but I think J Cole is one of the best hip-hop artist because he makes great music. His path started like many others as Hip-Hop usually just talks about degrading of women, promiscuity, guns and drugs. When Cole finished high school he went off to college at St. Johns University. He had always helped young African Americans at some point in their lives that have had similar dreams of becoming something in life. Rap has always dominated most of the black community to assist in the expression of their feelings, emotions and situations. Single parent homes are very common in the African American Community, and J. Cole’s is also a product of this unfortunate circumstance as he writes about his life through his music. He has been fascinated by rap since he was fourteen and followed his dreams becoming Jay-Z’s
Music can rock your world, enlighten your mind and change your perspective. When you think of rap music who comes first to mind? Without hesitation, it must be the self acclaimed best rapper alive, Lil Wayne. He alone can make such statements as “My picture should be in the dictionary next to the definition of definition” (Wayne, “Shoot Me Down”). Lil Wayne is a prominent force in the rap world. His debut Album in 1999, Tha Block is Hot went double platinum upon its release and even his lowest selling album is still certified as gold according to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Rollingstone Magazine declares “Lil Wayne is one of the most popular — and prolific — recording artists in the world” (Kreps). Top this with eight Grammy nominations and four Grammy wins and it is definitely hard to argue with the rap star’s claims. Lil Wayne, with his simple beginnings, soon found his way to the top of the charts with his outstanding lyrics, unique vocals, and quick wit by shutting down all critics with his many gold and platinum albums and thus truly establishing himself as the best rapper alive.

He may just seem like another rapper to you but if you actually listen to his lyrics you can see he’s not like any rapper out there. His name is Kanye West and he was born in Chicago Illinois. He grew up in the “ghetto” and learned to appreciate life. He didn’t learn to really, truly appreciate life until October of 2002. Driving back to his hotel late one night after a recording session, the new-coming rap/hip-hop artist was involved in a devastating, near fatal car accident. The crash left him with a broken jaw in three places and an appreciation for life. Just weeks after being released from the hospital he recorded his first major hit, “Through the Wire,” with his mouth still wired shut. He records every song like its going to be his last song and that makes every song better than the last. He’s not only a rap artist but also a producer. He has been responsible for being behind songs like Jay-Z’s Izzo, Girls, Girls, Girls, The Takeover, and 03 Bonnie and Clyde.
...is may come down to prejudice opinions, or the simple unwillingness to understand the introspective stories told through 64 bars of vivid imagery. Hip-hop’s essential element is words; however, most hip-hop being played on the radio focuses more towards a hot beat and a catchy hook to garner the average listener’s attention; therefore, they are being mislead into the world of hip-hop. Hip-hop can speak to you. It can get you thinking on a deep, insightful level. It just takes the will to listen, study, and learn.
There are many things I like about hip-hop. Including the beat, artists, and the big variety of voice styles. I love how most hip-hop songs have fast and upbeat tempos. It really makes me enjoy the music more. Also, a lot of artists include different meanings in their songs. Some may have been written when they were feeling down, energetic, or excited. I really enjoy how the different artists all have different voice styles. Some sing better than others but I like that.
Rap artist tell their life story through rap. Not only do they tell their story, but they also have a moral to their story. Tupac was one of the greatest rappers of all time. He was murdered at the age of 25. He is still, even in death, one of the most influential artists in the lives of urban people. Tupac told his life, from the beginning to the end, in his music. Rap music has given me personally something to look up to. Not a role model but hope of continuing my dreams because rappers successfully made it. “For what’s money without happiness, or hard times without the people you love” is from a song called “Love Yourz” by J. Cole. He clearly understands how there is “beauty in the struggle and ugliness in the success” because he’s lived that life. Other songs such as “2Face” or “The Autograph” were instantly relatable to me because he has been through several struggles from the beginning of his childhood. Cole’s father left when he was six leaving his mother and younger brother alone. Cole became “the man of the house” but becoming a rapper is not as easy as it seems. Cole’s messages in these two songs are relative because I too, have had several issues with my mother and father creating a sense of lonesome. Hearing music like Coles helped me overcome my
