Colors elicit neural reactions that are completely involuntary. Through these reactions we start to feel things that we may not understand. Emotions and memories are triggered just with the sight of one color. Now imagine as many colors as possible, blurred together, blended and stroked in meticulous ways that are created to evoke those reactions and emotions that you feel when you look at them. The Art Museum of Philadelphia has always been a place of peace, a sanctuary, for me. There I connect with my ancestors through the stories they tell with no words. Most recently I was able to see the works of many great still life painters and artists. Many think that a still life is the remedial step of an artist. This experience truly encouraged me to think in a way of what would my style be? I started to ask myself a lot of questions that are very relevant to any aspiring artist or art curator. Through the different way they used light, brush stokes, pen, pencil, canvas, paper, etc. they created a piece that truly defined them in that time of their lives. Whether the piece was created in an afternoon or over many years. Every aspect was completely thought through, or at least they appeared to be. Through the appearance that the paintings gave off of the thought out analyzations of the different aspects, the viewer is encourages to look at the different parts of the painting. This experience really made me think about what really needs to go into the paintings. It made me realize that sometimes like in some of the paintings the unfinished parts are really the most revealing. This is almost paralleled with us as human beings. It is almost always the unfinished or unrefined part of a person that creates that humanity that everyone looks for. It makes everyone feel comfortable because you are still on the same playing field. The same goes for art the unrefined parts reveal what it took to go from that part to some of the more finished parts of a painting. Through these different components of the paintings another can see what they need to do in order to get to where they may want to
