The purpose of an instructional specialist is “to align instruction with curriculum to meet the needs of all students.” XXXXXXX In order to support teachers, an instructional specialist must have a wealth of knowledge, be an effective teacher, and recognize the great challenges of the role. Above all, the instructional specialist must believe that all students can learn; the achievement gap between groups of students is unacceptable. First, an instructional specialist must have a great desire to learn. They must have a deep understanding of research that has been done on instructional strategies and how to best align instruction with various content areas. The instructional specialist needs to be aware of research-based instructional strategies that effectively meet needs of students. They need to understand standards-based planning in order to help teachers look at the big picture first and then plan instructional and assessment strategies to benefit all students. They must not only understand a great amount, they must also be able to show and articulate their thinking in order to support teachers. An instructional specialist needs strong facilitation skills in order to help teachers think about and learn the process of planning; do it with them, not for them. Must be able to plan with teachers and then demonstrate, co-teach, or observe and offer feedback. Assist teachers in understanding differentiating instruction and identifying the best strategies for learning. Being able to integrate content areas and also support non-core teachers in strategies that contribute to student learning in core areas is also important.
