Mental wellbeing is a key component of complete health and wellness that is usually overlooked by individuals of all ages. The WHO defines health as ‘a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.’ From the definition, to achieve a state of perfect health, mental wellbeing has to be put into consideration.

Mental health can be described as our positive interactions with the context and events in our life, and having the ability to cope with life’s stressors. Mental health problems can begin at anytime during your life (CAMH, 2010). In fact anything can make it difficult for an individual’s ability to interact effectively, and may lead into a mental health problem (Association, 2001).
Primarily, mental health can be defined or described as a state being mentally fit, but being mentally healthy does not always mean a person does not suffer from a mental health problem (Mentalhealth.org.uk, 2014). Good mental health can help you fulfil your potential and in general can help you cope with life in every aspect. Although good mental health is admirable, a person’s state of mind is constantly changing meaning that different life occurrences can affect your mental health as we develop in life (Mentalhealth.org.uk, 2014). There are different mental health symptoms that are currently evident throughout everyday life. When challenging the topic of mental health issues, most of them have been divided into two different groups depending on the seriousness of the problem. The terms given to describe these two groups are “Neurotic” and “Psychotic” (Steiner, 1993).
Some hypothesize that moderate levels of exercise will decrease the symptoms of mental health conditions (Blumenthal et al., 2007; Diaz & Motta, 2008; Motta, Kuligowski, & Marino, 2010; Rosenbaum, Nguyen, Lenehan, Tiedemann, van der Ploeg, & Sherrington, 2011) and therefore be used as an alternative or complimentary treatment option for mental health (Libby, Pilver, & Desai, 2012).

Mental health does not just affect the mind it also affects people’s physical health. Some physical health diseases can cause a mental health disorder and vice versa. Mental health disorders are associated with the occurrence, development, and outcome of some of the today’s most chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. When people go untreated from a mental health disorder are at a higher risk for many unhealthy behaviors such as alcohol and drug use, violent behavior, and suicide.
