Why Do Animals Deserve Rights?
Animal Rights is “rights (as to fair and humane treatment) regarded as belonging fundamentally to all animals”. Animal rights is a subject that needs to be taken seriously because just like humans, animals also deserve rights. The three main rights animals deserve are not being used for cosmetic tests, not being kept as pets when they belong in the wild (exotic pets), and not being forced to fight each other whether it is of their own kind or not, just for personal entertainment or money.
The first right that should belong to animals is for them not to be involved in cosmetic testing. "Companies that include animal testing are Maybelline, Lysol, Vicks, Cover girl, and MaryKay" (Animals Are Not Ours, 2016). Rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, monkeys, and mice are the types of small animals used for the tests of cologne, mascara, shampoo, and lipstick. These are injected into the animal’s thin skin or submitted into their fragile eyes. It is not because they are cruel, but because they see things on a different point of view. People who believe in animal rights believe animals should be treated equal as humans, while the people who don’t believe in the rights tend to have the thought animals are not as equal as humans, but do deserve proper treatment and care. For example, Jeff Miller who is a photographer at Madison University created the quote “We should treat animals decently because they’re just like human beings, but rather because they’re not” (Miller, 1). What Miller means by this, is animals should not be abused or treated poorly, be treated normally, and not like a human being.
