Professional practices are constantly changing and improving through a concept known as evidence based practice. This is apparent throughout nursing and commonly used to maintain manual handling and lifting techniques throughout hospitals and facilities alike. Firstly evidence based practice and its role in nursing will be explained as it is crucial to understand how and why it is used in this profession to further understand the methods in which are used to successfully implement this into everyday clinical practice.Ask a question, find evidence, appraise, implement and evaluate are the five steps used in evidence based practice research (Northern Territory Government. 2014). Secondly, these points will be explained in detail in reference to manual handling and its effect on patients and practitioners in a health care setting. Lastly, the process in which evidence is transferred into clinical practice will be evaluated in terms of how nurses and other practitioners take on the new information and whether or not it is actually been implemented.

Evidence based practice was originally identified as evidence based medicine, but over time it has been passed on and used in other professions such as education, and began to be acknowledged as evidenced based practice. Evidence based practice helps to define and justify clinical decision making. Some evidence based practice excludes the patient but this should be one of the main priorities the research should consider when validating guidelines to assure that decisions been made are for the best possible outcome for the patient. Evidence based practice if used as an extremely important tool in nursing to allow the best possible care to be given to patients. This is through the use of the 5 steps method and also through systematic research that allows for justification in decision making throughout the clinical setting. The article chosen for analyses shows some techniques for finding appropriate research and how this the transfers into the clinical setting. This shows to be impaired in its ability and the implementation of these practices must improve for EBP to have its greatest impact of the health care systems and patient care.
