Gary Becker argues that human capital is an important factor that contributes to household income and the inequality that people face within education indirectly leads to inequality between high and low caste family incomes. The analysis of Vani Borooah’s paper on the role of caste differences in education for children targets the consequences receiving government school education compared to private school academics. Private schools receive higher financial returns when admitting upper caste students into their institution. The average Brahmin household paid around Rs. 1515 for boys and Rs. 1236 for girls for private education. This includes costs for in-class lectures, books, uniforms and extra school expenses while low-caste could only afford to the pay Rs. 507 for the average low-caste boy and Rs. 390 for a girl which covered the essential costs of obtaining private education. As a result, most Dalit children were forced to attend government (public) schools and were subject to fewer amenities that aided in academic success.
