Gender inequality specifies to unequal treatment or approach of individuals based on their gender. It occurs from differences in socially constructed gender roles as well as biologically through chromosomes, brain structure, and hormonal differences. In 2006, the World Economic Forum introduced The Global Gender Gap Index. It is a framework that captures the magnitude and capacity of gender-based disparities and tracking their progress. The index measures national gender gaps on political, economic, education and health based criteria, and provides country rankings that allow for effective comparisons across regions and income groups, over time. The rankings are mainly designed to create a greater awareness among a global audience of the challenges posed by gender gaps and the opportunities created by reducing them. In this essay, I will be discussing the statement “Gender Inequalities exist and removing them is fundamental to development”. I will focus on how continents compare in their overall rankings taking in consideration health & survival, education, economic participation and political empowerment, with including a case study for an LEDC and MEDC country. North America In North America, the overall gap is mainly equal. Canada and the US are 20th and 23rd in the overall rankings. In American, Women’s yearly earnings compared to men’s rose rapidly from 1980 to 1990. It rose from 60.2% to 71.6% in just 10 years. It then rose less rapidly from the years 1990 to 2000. It rose slowly from 71.6% to just 73.7%. Then the following 10 years 2000 to 2010 it rose rapidly from 73.7% to 81%. ... ... middle of paper ... ...er inequality decreases as a countries gets richer or develops, suggesting that economic growth cold be leading to better gender outcomes. To have a generation have an equal gap of gender with education, political, social, and economic and health aspects makes a next generation stronger as they get taught and are able to sustain their lives. Mainly MEDC’s have a better shot at having that possibility due to access of money and live reliabilities. Coming back to the statement, “Gender inequalities exist and removing them is fundamental to development”. I believe that gender inequalities do exist but can be balanced out in countries, regions, and continents by mainly increasing a countries development. It’s a reassuring index of important information for a countries development.
