In this essay, I will address my own understanding of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, and how I would like to fulfill my first three needs (physiological, safety, love and belonging needs), level 4 (Esteem) needs and level 5 (Self-actualization) needs. Especially, I will discuss how I would like (may not be able) to satisfy my level 4 needs through my job. Then, I will explain how my job and self-actualization are (not) related. Also, I will reflect back on my life to find a few major events and people that have shaped my values I want to live by, which in turn affected my career choice and self-actualization. Finally, I will summarize my essay and discuss what I have learned about myself during this writing. These needs have to be met in order. My basic means of fulfilling each set of needs is through my work. Pay fulfills my physiological and safety needs; the environment fulfills my belonging needs; my coworkers fulfill my esteem needs; my self actualization needs can not be reached through my current workplace. My parents have heavily influenced my life, giving me motivation to be more successful than them but also grounding me in the knowledge that money can not create your happiness and can not replace love in your life. Having the knowledge that I do about my own self actualization and about money I have chosen a career choice that will meet my self actualization needs.
