Cultural diversity involves people of different cultures and ethnicities coming together in either a group, organization, or society. It also refers to the principle that each culture respects another’s differences and ways of life. The social environment that people live in today, is vastly different from how it was in the past. Years ago, jobs such as lawyers, doctors, and even musicians were primarily populated by the Caucasian male. Today, we see women and people of diversity rising to positions of influence and acquiring jobs they were once excluded from. Despite the progress made, there is still indisputable evidence of implicit injustice and ignorance of cultural diversity. This hinders the progression of society. In his article, Milton J. She argues that there is lack of diversity in positions of influence as well as the work force due to the “unconscious bias”. She believes this bias to be “the filters in which we see the world around us” (citation). The circumstance of our birth is something that cannot be changed or controlled yet, it still has the ability to dictate the futures of men and women of different cultures. In order to obstruct the effects of this “unconscious bias”, it needs to be acknowledged and identified. In comparison, Bennet believes the subject of cultural diversity is ignored and treated as a threat rather than an asset. Through his research, he found that society viewed monoculture as a type of “solution” to social injustices such as segregation and sexism. Bennet believes, in reality, this “Minimization changes racism, sexism, and other isms into privilege” (citation).
