ICE HAUSEN is an environmental, military action thriller. It examines relevant issues in today’s society and explores the possibility of what could very well occur today. This story mixes the serious issue of ozone depletion with a suspenseful military thriller to create a unique story. Driven by the protagonist’s desire to save the ozone layer and the penguins in the Antarctic, the plot keeps tension high. The visual setting is stunning. There are strong action sequences and an explosive climax. An environmental screenplay can be preachy, but here many compelling subplots with interesting characters keep the action moving. There’s no doubt that Waco is a terrific character. One effortlessly likes this eccentric and rather reclusive man, who only wants to save the penguins. Like in an Alfred Hitchcock film, he’s a rather innocent man who gets entangled with a deadly plot. He’s an ordinary man forced into an extraordinary situation. From beginning to the end one roots for Waco. The plot is neatly organized into three distinct acts. The opening sets the tone for this military thriller. They are easy to root for. They also develop a natural rapport with each other. Waco is a loner and his only true friend is a penguin. He’s not good at relating with people. He can only relate on a science level. He’s a “cowboy” at heart. He’s charming and witty and he does the right thing. At the end, he learns to become part of the human race again. It might benefit the script for Waco to be more resistant to the idea of Dakota teaming up with him, but that Dakota insists. This adds more tension, and if Dakota is a traitor or is trying to set him up, this would make more sense. Dakota is just as likable as the ambitious reporter. She doesn’t trust men and her backstory tells us why – her father abandoned them. This makes her even closer to her mother and at the end she picks her mother over her love for Waco (if she did love him.). The concern about Dakota is that at the end she reveals it was all a setup and it’s challenging to believe it. Hints of this need to be planted and if they were, they were missed or not clear (with the exception of her dialogue about being like her mother – nice plant). It just feels awkward at the end when she seems so loving and wants him to come with her, but then she turns into a completely different person. The audience may not believe this.
