Actions are valued more than words, silence is an acceptable form of communication, manliness is next to godliness, and respect and loyalty are key. These are a few guidelines that belong to the infamous cowboy code John Grady lives up to in “All the Pretty Horses”. According to critic Jane Tompkins, the code consists of "self-discipline; unswerving purpose; the exercise of knowledge, skill, ingenuity, and excellent judgment; and a capacity to continue in the face of total exhaustion and overwhelming odds.”
Ever since he was a sixteen year old boy, Grady longed to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps into becoming a cowboy. He lives life according to the code which is valuing honor and loyalty. He loves the ardency in horses and the cowboy lifestyle. Grady also valued the ardency that was in his grandfather. He was raised on his grandfather’s ranch, which his mother sold after his grandfather’s death. After the ranch was sold Grady felt the need to move because he no longer felt an attachment to Texas while still trying to be faithful to the cowboy code, so he went to Mexico to find what went “missing” in his hometown.
It is uncertain whether Grady attempts to adhere to the cowboy code that he looks up to and believes in. Many times Grady proved to the reader that he likes to do the right thing, instead of doing things in his favor. He does what is necessary even if it costs his happiness. A great example is when he refuses to bribe Perez. Instead of bribing Perez to get his safety, he invests the money into a knife to defend himself. Grady does this because he is sworn to fight as a noble cowboy.
Another example is when the crossing of the Rio Grande River. This was when Rawlins and Grady met Jimmy Blevins. They talk about w...

John Grady is shines in the aspect of withstanding any challenges that he faces. If you look at the cowboy code, his character to almost all of them. He becomes an existential hero by demonstrating ardency despite his new awareness. Ultimately, he becomes aware of the reality of power and culture. He becomes authentic.
Overall, Grady represents the ideal cowboy because he is yearning to live free, adventurous and is honest. He does get into bad situations at times but it is not his fault, it is the outside forces or other individuals that do not view life the same way he does. He tries to live up to his code no matter what situation he finds himself in which is impressive. He hold himself to his morals without compromise.
