The pursuit of knowledge is something that humans have participated in since the beginning of time. As a society, people have a risked their lives, fought, and have even died to learn the truth. Humanism is defined as “a doctrine, attitude, or way of life centered on human interests or values; especially : a philosophy that usually rejects supernaturalism and stresses an individual's dignity and worth and capacity for self-realization through reason”. In the two films Hunt for the Red October and V for Vendetta, many characters demonstrate the ideals of humanism through their bold actions. Through the use of powerful characters who wish to seek the truth or enlighten others, the two films idolize the ideals of humanism.

Jack Ryan in Hunt for the Red October. Throughout the film the audience sees Dr. Ryan engaged in many challenges. One such challenge is his fear of flying on helicopter due to an accident he had been in, and yet he overcomes his fear in the pursuit of knowledge both for the Caterpillar engine and of Ramius plan, By overcoming his fear he shows that he cares more for the unknown knowledge and betterment of himself and others than himself, which is one of the principles of humanistic thought. Furthermore, he constantly asks questions to himself and others, and he questions authority and he makes sure to absorb all information he can. Thus, by leaning all he can Dr. Ryan is demonstrating a viable aspect of humanism. Without his drive to seek the knowledge, Dr. Ryan may have never seen the submarine and he may have never have gotten over his fear of flying, but because of his bold actions he was able to accomplish both, and make a positive impact on the
