The film The Hunger Games (Gary Ross, 2012) offers supportive view of Althusser’s theory of the state ideological apparatus and how they function. Two main Repressive State Apparatus (RSA) are depicted through President Coriolanus Snow residing in Panem and his peacekeepers which comprise a gendarmerie controlled by the Capitol and are tasked with maintaining order throughout the nation of Panem. The education curriculum of District 12 is centered on coal mining. Haymitch Abernathy is mentor to Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark. At first he comes off a useless drunk that would be of no help but throughout the film he explains in order to get items that could save your life you need to get sponsors and that the only way to in doing so is to become likeable. Which means you have to conform to the games ideology. Near the beginning of the film at the time of the reaping, an ideology is presenting by Effie Trinket in a short film disguising the games a pageant of honor, courage and sacrifice where a lone victor will be bathed in riches as a reminder of the capitols generosity and forgiveness to remember the past and safeguard the future from any rebellions and uprising.
The ideology in the Games is that there is a dependence of on the Capitol by the twelve districts, and the Capitols continuous definitions of certain actions such as rebellion and resistance towards the Capitol itself. Seneca Crane, in charge of the 72th Hunger Games is seen one final time in room with the same type berries that Katniss and Peeta were ready to use in order to take their lives, it is insinuated that he was to take his own life for the actions of Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark. The Hunger Games are basically the embodiment of society's off sense of entertainment. It combines the oddities that are violence and reality TV. However, what is it that insinuates the tones for this type of movie? Initially, there's a scene that addresses the fact that the society of this movie is conducting the games as though it was a standardized athletic tournament. In the movie, Haymitch Abernathy brings up how there are sponsors who deliver supplies to the “contestants”. Basically, sponsors influence the who will live or die, incidentally affecting the course of the games. During this scene, he claims, “And to get sponsors, you have to make people like you.” This scene mentions the thought on how people living in societies today work
The movie The Hunger Games, originally based on a book by Suzanne Collins, is about a place called Panem, which is ruled by the Capitol and has 12 districts within it. These 12 districts are separated founded on their economic statuses, meaning the higher the district, the more impoverished the residents are. There are 2 tributes that are chosen to participate, forcibly, in The Hunger Games each year. Each competitor is instructed to eliminate one another in order to survive and come out on top. There is only one tribute allowed to come out of the arena alive. Katniss lives in District 12, which is the most impoverished district of them all, and she volunteers as tribute in “the Reaping” when her sister is chosen to participate. She and the other tribute from her district, Peeta, make it into the arena with the hopes that one of them comes out the winner and above all else, alive (Ross, 2012). When Gary Ross’ 2012 adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ famous novel ‘The Hunger Games’ exploded on screens, it was received as an action-packed, thrilling story of survival, determination and over-coming corruption. Audience’s watched in equal parts awe and horror as Katniss was thrust into Panem’s battle arena and fought for justice, family and friendship. However, if we as an audience think more critically about the film; if we think beyond the wild costumes, gripping action and skilful performances, we can see that the story explores complex philosophical ideas that strongly relate to the experiences of humanity in the real world.
Suzanne Collins has, through her writings, used great imagery to expose the meaningful side of ‘The Hunger Games’, the side that is not all about what takes place in the arena. The Capitol’s rule over the districts, the reality-show part of the Hunger Games and the Mockingjay pin are all fragments of deeper meanings that create the basis of all that the story is. Suzanne Collins has depicted the country of Panem as a place overruled by a large city, known as the Capitol. The Hunger Games is apparently a means to keep peace and a fair punishment for the rebellion of the districts, where district 13 was obliterated in the mess. My group chose the movie, The Hunger Games, because we felt like it represented clear differences between today’s society and the society in the movie. This movie offers different mindsets and ideas compared to today’s modern society. For instance, the concepts of socialization, politics, and government are different in the movies society. In addition, the United States also does not select two members to compete to the death, nor split up groups according to power and wealth. Our government also does not allow the deviance like the movie does. The social changes are a huge factor as well in the movie. These are just a few concepts of sociology that will be discussed by the group that touch upon major cultural differences.
In both books they share some traits, even though they may not look anything alike they are. both of these novels are dystopian novels and many characters share similarity’s.

Katniss does fit the profile of being a dystopian protagonist. When Katniss was in the Hunger Games arena she often felt trapped and wanted to go home so she could be with her family. She thought the society they lived in was dreadful because the capitol was forcing may people to live in a district were many people are poor and force the children

The Capitol’s appearance deceives the tributes and the surrounding districts. As the train leaves the tunnel from the mountains and is flooded with sunlight Katniss and Peeta rush to the window to see what they would normally see on television with their own eyes.). This demonstrates an act of trickery by the Capital. Katniss further describes the, “glistening buildings…the shiny cars” (59) as having, “colors [that] seem artificial, the pinks to deep, the greens too bright, the yellow painful to the eyes” (59). Through this description that Katniss provides it showcases that the Capitol hides its true colors through this fake appearance of a happy, colorful place. During the interviews, Peeta indicates that he has had the biggest crush on Katniss Everdeen for the longest time but Katniss takes this the wrong way and Haymitch corrects her by saying, “"Who cares? It's all a big show. It's all how you're perceived" (135) Haymitch’s viewpoint demonstrates how characters must deceive the truth to strategically improve one’s chances to win the games. Katniss and Peeta use this budding romance to gain more sponsorships throughout the entire games. Also, at the end of the novel Haymitch warns Katniss that she must convince the Capitol that her act with the berries was not treason “your only defense can be you were so madly in love you weren't
Since she is the female victor from district 12, she is in the 74th Hunger Games. She sees how painful and scary it is and so she tries to stop the capital which is who is controlling everything. She doesn’t want that to happen to anyone else. She rebels against President Snow in plan of eventually killing him to take over the capital and change the world. Teens can relate to this because a lot of the time we feel controlled. It might be by a parent, teacher, grandparent or someone else but all of us are controlled by someone. A lot of teenagers end up rebelling because they feel as if they have no choices. They go against the rules of who they are rebelling against. That persons rules and values are not necessarily right. Who decides what is right? It seems as if we have entered into a state time where there is no right and wrong. Katniss breaks free of that control and does her own thing. Another way teens can relate to the hunger games is through the love triangle. Some of us might have a similar situation of where we might like two people. In the movie it says, “What I need is not Gales fire, kindled with rage and hatred. I have plenty of fire myself. What I need is the dandelion in the spring. In a not-too-distant, some 74 years, into the future the United States of America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war, to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 13 districts. Each year, two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games; these children are referred to as tributes (Collins, 2008). The Games are meant to be viewed as entertainment, but every citizen knows their purpose, as brutal intimidation of the subjugated districts. The televised games are broadcasted throughout Panem as the 24 participants are forced to eradicate their competitors, literally, with all citizens required to watch. The main character throughout the series is a 16-year-old girl from District 12 named Katniss Everdeen.
The main character, Katniss, volunteers as tribute for her district to save her sister from having to be tribute. Upon arriving in the Capitol for the games, she sees just how vast the gap between the Capitol and districts are. To fight against this class struggle, she begins to revolt. At first this comes in the form of small things, like shooting an arrow at a pig feast of Capitol higher-ups and refusing to kill her friend in the games, resulting in the first ever co-victors of the Hunger Games. Katniss’ actions soon lead to full blown rebellion in the districts, starting a revolutionary war between them and the Capitol. At one point Katniss remarks: “My ongoing struggle against the Capitol, which has so often felt like a solitary journey, has not been undertaken alone. I have had thousands upon thousands of people from the districts at my side.” (Catching Fire 90).
