One of the biggest problems the world faces today is the fast food industry with its expanding growth. The fast food industry continues to grow and that is because of the many people who are unaware of what they are actually eating. Everyone should think twice before deciding to eat fast food. There are many health risks when it comes to eating food that is made within a matter of seconds. “The food is not properly taken care of, which leads all the way back to where the food is originally produced”, according to Eric Schlosser, author of Fast Food Nation.
Fast food that contains high amounts of sodium, cholesterol, calories, and fat is the cause of reason can cause many diseases for people such as obesity and high blood pressure. Being obese does not only lower our self-esteem, it can also increase risks of hypertension, heart disease, stroke, arthritis, diabetes and some types of cancer. In an article, the author said that “While fast food, and especially the fast-food hamburger, has become a staple of the modern American diet, may critics charge that it causes a variety of public health problems, different environmental concerns, and an excessive homogenization of both American culture and other societies throughout the world. Many medical researchers contend that fast food typically gives consumers excessive fat and little nutritional value, leading to numerous obesity-related health problems”(Hogan). In fact, fast food is very popular in America.
An individual does have responsibility for their dietary choices, but perhaps they cannot afford the expensive prices of healthier foods, so they have to turn to fast foods as a cheaper unhealthy way of eating. In my opinion, fast food is to blame for the rise in obesity because of the cheap prices, their locations, especially in low income neighborhoods, and poor advertising. Fast food chains attract thousands of consumers a day and continue to serve unhealthy food that is bad for the body. Frequent consumption of fast food can lead to serious health problems for the body. Obesity is associated with high blood sugar or diabetes, heart problems, high blood pressure, stroke and disease (Rodrigo).
Fast food raises a great number of disputes, contradictions and viewpoints of its negative effect on population. Researchers argue that fast food nutrition lead inevitably to increased child and adult obesity, a number of serious diseases, to mental problems and decreased interest in sport activities. Why do people like fast food? The answer is simple: fast food is provided with tasty elements that make people eat mainly junk food. Eating patterns have changes leading the nation to degradations in such a way.
These frequently consumed meals bring many negative effects upon us, including health issues, a poor environment and social problems. People all over the world are suffering from obesity and heart diseases, two of the main causes of deaths today. Every breath you take may contain polluted air coming from chemicals used to make packaging for fast foods. Yet even with all this negativity towards fast foods, it does have a good side by bringing in money for the economy of the United States. Hence, with fast food consumption come not only the bad but also the good.
These types of food are considered as junk food that the body does not necessarily need to consume, but they are often eaten for the delicious taste from the high amounts of fat and sugar they contain (Wolin and Petrelli). Fast food is also providing quick service by frying a lot of the foods to provide a quick service and hot food (Hogan). Fried food is considered unhealthy from the high amount of fat needed to cook the fried foods which is restricted to those with obesity (Wolin and Perelli). Hogan also noted that McDonalds and Burger King are fast food restaurants that regularly compete in the fast food industry. Since unhealthy delicious food has been on demand in the food industry for many years, these fast food restaurants compete by serving those foods to stay in business (Hogan).
Fast food is simply bad for your health and something needs to be done, in order to make it healthy for those who enjoy fast food, because fast food is known to cause health problems. Due to the fact that fast food isn’t natural, has a lot of added ingredients, and it is far from fresh. An article from the very well known Readers Digest states that even a healthy meal from Mc Donald’s isn’t even healthy like their crispy chicken salad has about the same calories as a Big Mac. The effects of eating fast food on a regular basis is bound to catch up to you, and some of those effects are diabetes, heart problems, high cholesterol, and nevertheless obesity. One way to simply avoid these effects is to not eat fast food or to eat it in moderation.
If people who are hurry to get their food and do not have much time to eat, fast food must the good choice for them. McDonald, KFC, and Popeye would be the first few restaurants show up in people’s mind, but still has many healthy fast foods in the United States. What our society does not understand is that the health risks outweigh the few minutes of satisfaction the cheap food brings. Many of the leading causes of death caused by fast food are diabetes, high cholesterol, heart disease and obesity.
Many people, with their busy schedules, go to fast food restaurants or stop at the gas station for a snack. People do this everyday without thinking if it is a good idea to eat there or not. It is faster than making yourself a home cooked meal. Despite its convenience, fast food can be very dangerous to us in the long run, Junk food is high in calories, but low in nutrients, filling your diet with junk food causes an array of problems to your body. This is why we should be aware of the risks and effects that junk food can give us so we can live a healthy lifestyle.
