Bragging can lead us to a wrong estimation of achievement. I have never been arrogant person. Actually, I was brought up to be a modest person, especially about whatever I have and my achievements. However, I used always to be the best grade achieved in my classes in the elementary, intermediate and high schools. I used to be always the first. This actually gave me a big sense of self-confident which is something good. However, tater on this feeling turned to be arrogance. It gave me a false self esteem that I thought I am distinctive person who can do well in everything and especially school with not much effort. This happened when I was in my first year in the college. At the first course I was so energetic and studied hard and did well in all exams and homework’s results so that I got a grade. This falsely made me feel …show more content…
I did not recognize that fact that the achievements were only a result of the great work. The problems started in the second course of the same year. I had such a big feeling of arrogance that I will do well in every subject even if I don’t work hard. In the first two weeks of the course we got a short quiz and I got a B plus grade which I accepted. In the midterm I got a B minus. I justified this that all the exam was so hard and said to myself that all the students got grades below my grade so that this made me feel happy even though this is not the grade that I am used to accept. In another quiz I got a bad grade and this even couldn’t make me alarm or wake up from my false arrogance. The worst happened after the final exam and the end of the course when I got D grade. This was a
Arrogance; an insulting way of thinking or behaving that comes from believing that you are better, smarter, or more important than other people. Arrogance is an attitude that can describe any individual with overbearing pride. However, American Psychiatric Association notes that people who are also narcissistic are frequently described as cocky, self-centered, manipulative, and demanding. According to Paul J. Hannig, Ph.D, Narcissistic Personality Disorder is “a pervasive pattern of grandiosity (in fantasy or behavior), need for admiration, and lack of empathy” (Ashmun). By examining the relationships, behaviors, and internal conflicts within, Willa Cather’s Paul’s Case, Paul’s “case” can be diagnosed as Narcissistic Personality Disorder.
It is just amazing how helpful it just happens to be. However, the fact that I have a tendency to easily fall in anxiety does not make me neither an insecure, nor a self- pitied individual; instead, I do have very high rate of self-confidence and I can say I am generally happy with myself. As a matter of fact, I have been told many times I might be exaggerating on the expectations set on myself, with a slight tendency to narcissism; Nevertheless, I am proud to say my self-confidence has took me where I am today; one example is my experience of how I happened to start college courses faster than it was previewed: It was last year I came to the United States with just a slight Notion of English, thus I was supposed to spend at least one whole year or many more taking ESL classes in order to fit in college level courses, but from the first class
The introduction of “A Modest Proposal” by Jonathan Swift will turn out to be not so modest. Swift divides his thesis into two parts. The first part of his proposal is an outlandish idea of using human babies for food. The theory behind this is the Irish have enough children around to supplement their lack of food. In the second part he will unveil his true intentions, which is, for the English to help out the poor Irish people. Swift uses different technics throughout his proposal to get the attention of the English. He begins by getting them to believe they have common interests. Secondly, he introduces an idea that is not feasible because it is so grotesque. Finally his true reason, which is, helping the poor. Swift makes a strong point in the descriptions of his essay making it very effective.
I had performed extremely well in my calculus 1 class and had over a 100% in the class. I had aced the previous two exams and felt confident about optimization, which the next exam was over. I studied for close to 60 hours over two weeks for the exam and had gone over the previous exams and homework from the section. I ended up getting a 72% on the exam and once I looked over it realized that the problems I had gotten wrong were over minimization and not maximization. After looking over the questions and doing corrections I could not believe I got such easy questions wrong.
The majority of people have a subject they were never good at. Unless your a genius or have a photographic memory, kudos to you. But the rest of us have to work twice as hard to achieve a passing grade to at least pass the class. Some of us have been told, horrible things that discourages us and we just give up. Verbal words, that have a huge negative impact on us. Now, this paper isn’t to make you feel sorry about yourself, this paper is to reflect on your ups and downs on the subject you had the most trouble at. I know its scary admitting your faults but how can you move one from your faults if you don’t admit them? But while admitting your faults you also have your strengths, even if it was determination to keep going, that is something you should be proud of, because you never gave up.
Too much confidence can cause a sense of arrogance, much like Odysseus. Not enough confidence can make you uninspiring and weak as a leader, much like David. People who live their own monomyth everyday, and have the right amount of confidence, achieve great things.
In all parts of the world and throughout history the topic of a woman’s dress has been an issue. In the United States alone 1.3 million women have revealed having been raped or sexually assaulted in their life time while only 84 thousand rape cases were reported to the authorities. This means that a woman in the United States has a 1 in 5 chance of being sexually assaulted with the height of the danger being between the ages of 16 and 19 years old. Though this is not only an issue that effects the women of this country only three percent of men have admitted to having been sexually assaulted compared to the much larger percentage of women suffering from these kind of advances. This issue behind this subject is that women are often blamed for attacks that happen to them because of the manner in which they dress. Some of the first questions ask of a woman by investigators in what she was wearing that to time of the assault. The general attitude is that the woman was “asking for it.” and thus were given what they deserved. In many homes and religious institutions the topic of a woman’s modesty is presented while she is still a girl. She is often taught to clothe herself in such a way as to not arouse the lust of a man and that it is their duty to keep the thoughts of a male or any other individual clean. To this view point there is much objection as many women believe they should not be held responsible for the actions or thoughts of another being. In order to resolve many issue linked with this subject the proposal can be made that members of both sexes refrain from wearing clothing. This proposal is made, with this topic in mind, as a simple suggestion to to resolve conflicting opinions on the matter of dress and modesty, to redu...
Exam number one. The test to start off the semester. Bombed it. What seemed to be so easy, all of a sudden, got extremely difficult. I went blank. Scientifically speaking, I had test anxiety. Next thing I know, I’m sitting with a F in the class. A pretty low F at that. But how? All of this “low grade clerical work” was such a breeze. It was like I forgot everything I did for the past two weeks. So of course I panic. I can’t go into college next fall with an unacceptable grade like that on my transcript! I make it a point to study hard for the next
However, the difficulties I was experiencing during my first year of high school made me realize that it was imperative to meticulously scrutinize the way I studied in order to ameliorate and become the student I used to be. Additionally, I became aware that my ability to speak English was affecting me, but later I came to the conclusion that if this was a determining factor in my performance in class, I had to challenge myself by engaging in more rigorous courses. As time went on, however, due to the fact that I was surrounded by students I considered to be far ahead, I felt very intimidated by my advanced classes. Furthermore, I became aware that some of my teachers from the advanced placement classes seemed to doubt my ability to perform at the level expected, just by hearing my accent. To be condemned to failure simply because I did not speak English the same way my fellow classmates did, was a terrible sinking feeling. Nonetheless, this circumstance made me very diligent in all my classes, for it made me very attentive to the topics discussed, and it made me evaluate the extent to which I studied. As a result, with my grades and work ethics throughout the year, I proved those teachers wrong and received an apology from the one I came to admire
Self-esteem includes confidence, achievement, respect of others, and a need to be a unique individual. Being confident looks good on everyone, though some are more confident than others it still is needed to better yourself. Someone that gives there all nonstop and always does there best and never tries to take short cuts are the ones that everyone envies in school. They are the ones that get praised by all the teachers and they get awarded for doing their best. This can be both good and bad, good because then it shows the student that they are doing good and it makes themselves feel a lot better and it gives them confidence. Bad though because then it makes the other students feel bad about them and that causes their self-esteem to drop. Getting respect by a teacher and giving it is important to maintain a great classroom environment. If both parties are getting the respect needed, then everything works out in perfect harmony and the student can continue to work hard and the teacher can continue to help the student work
It does not matter what anyone thinks, the mark you award yourself shall be your grade. Hence, self-esteem is created by your assessment of yourself and not how others rate you.
It was exactly four years when this happened, being an 8th grader. I remember what my teacher said to our class that day, “Guys, we will have a quiz on this tomorrow”, referring to the book we were reading the past few weeks. I wasn’t really in the mood to take that quiz because I didn’t want to review the previous chapters from the book again in order to remember some important plots from there. I was also tired after a restless sleep, meaning that it made it hard for me to concentrate on one thing that required patience and careful reading. The next day, I wasn’t ready at all. I felt the nervousness right at my chest as soon as my teacher gave me the quiz, and our class only had 30 minutes to complete it. Carefully, I decided to use my phone secretly to find all the answers that I could to finish the quiz immediately, but that didn’t happen. I managed to look up two answers before Ms. Moreno noticed me using my phone. She then took my phone and my quiz and said, “You have a zero now”, as she walked towards her desktop. That was a big failure for me that day, and all of my classmates started laughing at me and asking why I did it. I turned red with embarrassment and knew it was because I didn’t study. The next day Ms. Moreno announced that everyone had passed the quiz - except for me.
This created a delicate and fragile mentality, not to seek truth and problem inside of myself, but to search the core problem outside, when facing failure. Finally, this causes terrible cycle, repeating classes and failure in order to match into my unrealistic and unknown expectation, which approaches to stability, security and love. Therefore, my attitude and mentality was not ready to grant this aid at the university; not specific desire to learn from passion, not ready to ask for help outside, because of my vain ego and naive optimistic. But, now I have desired to learn subjects and to seek more curiosity. Loving myself and accomplishment and dreaming in faith will resolve my inner problem and potentiate self-esteem slowly, but firmly. Also, at the same time, theoretical methods demonstrate to break this crummy consequence and to prevent failure from the
Those who feel good about themselves are level as having a high self-esteem, they are usually happy, successful and productive in life, they can persist longer at difficult task, and are more accepting in society. On the other hand people with low self-esteem are more anxious, depressed and pessimistic about their future. They likely conform to peer pressure and are prone to failure. “Self-esteem might reflect a belief about whether he or she is intelligent and attractive; a high self-esteem may refer to one’s worth as person and one’s successes and accomplishment.” Self- esteem refers to a global evaluation of the self, and there may be moderate correlations between school performances, which I strongly agree. Some people have higher self-esteem that others do and this could influence the way they think about themselves. For example, a person personality, abilities and relationships with others can be linked to person response to success or failure and others personal
Others will say there is a difference between being conceited, and being confident, although they don’t think of the word bragging and when it comes in place. Some say being conceited is proving something you don’t really believe (Hazel-1). In another perspective it really just shows a person that loves them self and is proud of who they are, what they have, and what they can show others. Confident can change a person's self-esteem and even how they look at themselves (Chandler). Nowadays it is the word “bragging” nobody likes
