Are great leaders born or created? This is one subject that has been greatly debated over the years, and there is no right or wrong answer. There is evidence that certain personality traits are more inclined to leadership, such as extroverts. “Leadership describes the dynamic social and relational influence process of understanding the situation and facilitating individual and collective efforts to accomplish shared goals” (Ramthun, 2015). 161). Organizational politics can be separated into two categories--individual and organizational. Individual factors include: “high self-monitors, internal locus of control, high Mach personality, organizational investment, perceived job alternatives, and expectations of success. Organizational factors include: “reallocation of resources, promotion opportunities, low trust, role ambiguity, unclear performance evaluation system, zero-sum reward, democratic decision making, high performance pressures, and self-serving senior managers” (Robbins & Judge, 2009 p. 464). Regardless of company size, there is some form of politicking taking place in most organizations. The manner in which leadership uses their authority can either further the political environment or help discourage it. Leaders should lead with integrity and set the tone for the organization. The overall culture also influences, whether the negative behaviors of politicking is tolerated or addressed. While some employees view organizational politics as an opportunity to further their personal agendas and careers, others are affected negatively and feel threatened. At that time, our Chief Executive Officer was a man of great integrity and concern for people. While his first priority was to our patients, he also understood the importance of taking care of the employee. His philosophy was take care of the employees and they will take care of you. Under his reign, our healthcare system grew and developed a stellar reputation. Everyone wanted to work for our healthcare system. It actually took me two years of updating my application and calling on a regular basis before landing a job. I began in the laundry room and I was so proud! Fast forward to present day, I am watching the system that I have known, respected, and loved all these years, experience high turnover, dissatisfied employees, low performance, inappropriate behavior, and various inconsistencies. Why is this happening? There are numerous factors, but partly because of poor management decisions and their treatment of employees. This is not across the entire organization; we do have some really strong leaders that care in some areas. Why is it allowed? The political climate is not being managed and the poor managers are not held accountable. My Employee Relations team plays an important role in disciplinary actions taken with employees. Warren Bennis’ novel, On Becoming a Leader, is the book I was able to read. Bennis worked years on this novel constructing it off of one of his former creations. Finally, in Cambridge, Ma Bennis published his story by Perseus publishing. Throughout this book he centers around the search to understand exactly how leaders are made. There are almost as many definitions of leadership as there are persons who have attempted to define leadership (Stogdill, 1974). Therefore, it is very difficult to understand what leadership actually is. According to John Sculley leadership revolves around vision and ideas and has to do more with inspiring people towards direction and goal. A leader is a person capable of inspiring other people to do things without sitting on top of them with a checklist. Precisely, leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a desired goal (Northouse, 2012). Distinguishing between leaders and non-leaders is hard as there exists no clear understanding of what differentiates leaders from non-leaders. Leadership and authority are constructed socially by superiors and subordinates, followers and peers.
Throughout 2016, many different people will claim they can lead America to greatness again just as they do each election year. This directs attention towards leadership, and most Americans simply trust that these potential candidates display leadership characteristics. Unfortunately, politicians don’t always exemplify leadership, and many Americans experience poor leaders daily such as dreadful bosses. Because of these commonplace experiences, leadership may not appear as a direct character trait. Adaptable communication, the ability to inspire, a clear passion, and professional attitudes all characterize a true leader.

Although there are many outstanding, albeit necessary qualities of a good leader, it is the leader’s beliefs in which greatness is given its first breath, fostered by action, and spread throughout the institution. A great leader believes in encouraging, not destroying; in setting the precedence instead of yielding to prominence ; in collaboration, not division; in giving, not taking; and in having high standards and volunteering to be the first of many to be held to them. A great leader does not take advantage of the people being lead, but instead, creates an advantage for the people by giving them the opportunities to lead. Only when people take ownership of an institution will passion be cultivated, action be taken, and greatness be achieved.
The leadership is a result of a combination of traits, with special emphasis on the personal qualities of the leader, which he should possess certain personality traits that would be special facilitators in leadership performance. This theory shows that leaders are born as such, there is no likelihood of 'making' them later with personal development techniques.
Office politics can have advantages that may motivate certain employees and cliques. It can be very productive, as they usually know each other well and can utilize each person’s talent in a team setting. How a supervisor or manger deals with office politics can ultimately lead to his or her success or demise. It can also be the most unproductive and destructive problem in the workplace; which can derail the best laid business plans. It can eventually take down what was once a profitable smooth running business if it is allowed to continue or if upper management is a participant.

Organizations have leaders who are effective and ineffective. Many of us want to be leaders but, do we have what it takes to be effective or are we going to be ineffective. Leaders are people who build their organization and employees up. Ineffective leaders are those who only care about getting a check. This paper will discuss effective and ineffective leaders. Competitiveness can only be attained when leaders are in a position to set the right standards in their firms and coordinate affairs appropriately by understanding consumer and employee needs.
A society with the absence of leadership will lead to chaos. Recently, the Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat died and this has caused his followers to be in disarray. Currently in Palestine the followers are trying to ameliorate life and figure who will replace Arafat. For when there is an absence of leadership it causes followers to panic. The panic of the people leads to the confusion of their everyday life. Leadership implies that a person must posses certain qualities. There are many traits that must be shown to be a good leader. If a leader is noncommittal and callow then a society will fail. However when trying to restore order in a society one person may try to accomplish it by themselves but this rarely works. When working alone or in a small group, three things can happen and lead to more disarray. These things are isolation, too much authority, and control.
Many people associate leadership with a specific job title or form of power within an organization. However, through personal experience, I have concluded that leadership can come in many forms and position as well as from multiple sources of roles and job titles both with and without power.
