For this paper I considered a variety of people that have seen me communicate on different levels. I started by interviewing one of my coworkers, then I asked for the participation of one of the consumers, and finally a fellow member of my church. It was interesting to find out how others felt about the way in which I communicate. In the process of writing this paper I have learned a lot about myself.
Andy and I work closely together at a small daycare in Quinlan. I thought she would be a great candidate for this assignment, because she observes how I communicate with the children and other coworkers. When it comes to the little ones in our daycare she said she loves to watch me tell them stories, because I make great facial expressions. She informed me that it is vital that I know how to change my speed and clearness depending on whom I am speaking to. In part one, Petersen paints a picture of how he became interested in the topic of communication. He also describes major problems that all communicators have in common. Since he grew up in an environment full of communication deficiencies, it drove him to clarify issues that were common to all communicators. One of the foundational concepts to Petersen’s book is the nature of communication. Petersen called communication the lubrication designed to keep functions of stomach, heart, and head working separately and together. The stomach is the source of feeling words, the heart is the source of perspective words, and the head is the source of our perception of facts. Without these three elements working together, communication becomes deficient. In my experience and understanding how this concept of thinking and feeling affects mine and others people relationships goes a long way towards reducing disagreement and disconnection.
In every society nonverbal communication is one of the most powerful tools that a person can use to interpret the message that is being delivered. Even though verbal communication is fairly straightforward, nonverbal communication allows others to sense the true emotions of the person that is expressing them. For example even though a person may say that they are not irritated, their usage of voice may display otherwise. Nonverbal communication not only reveals hidden messages, but it also complements, substitutes, and exaggerates verbal communication.

There are all different types of communication that people will use through out their life. The most important type of communication is interpersonal communication. Interpersonal communication differs from other forms of communication in that there are few participants involved, the participants are in close proximity to each other, there are many sensory channels used, and feedback is immediate. Interpersonal communication is the information received from listening to what someone else is saying. Interpersonal communication always uses intonation, diction and enunciation to give meaning to information. Intonation, diction and enunciation sometimes give more meaning to what is being said than the actual words themselves. In the following paragraphs, I will explain to the reader the importance of interpersonal communication in business.
Interpersonal communication, defined as the process by which people exchange information, feelings, and meaning through verbal and non-verbal messages, is an integral part of our everyday life (SkillsYouNeed, 2015). During the communication I often express the emotional opinions about the products and services to develop an emotional connection between the customers and the products or services that I am supposed to offer them. This communication style has helped me in my career as this style makes a lot of customers feel secure and safe.
Communication is something we all humans use. Communication “is the sharing of information between individuals by using speech”. People have ways of communicating some have their weaknesses in conversations and others have their strengths. When I communicate with others I feel that some things I say I do not verbalize right. I have two strengths and three weaknesses in my communicating. My three weakens in my communication are, check nonverbal feedback, to make people wrong and recognize that people understand information in different ways and my two strengths in my communication are being flexible, and take responsibility for the communication.
The purpose of this paper is not to teach you, or to show you, how interpersonal communication is essential to everyday life at home or work. But, I am going to do my best to at least show you how essential communication skills are in all areas of life by using me as the example. My plan is to focus on some of the elements of interpersonal communication that we have been touching on this semester. While reading our Interpersonal Communications Book, three goals kept being highlighted that I personally wanted to accomplish by the end of course. I’m sure that by now I have noticed that I keep referring to my topics as goals.
It is very important to understand that in everyday communication we are either the speaker or listener and it’s important that we do those jobs as best we can in order to have a healthy communication relationship. This activity was very useful because I got to reflect on my past successes and failures in my communicating strategies and in doing so I can improve and adapt to become a better communicator and listener. I believe that this assignment is very useful because it is real life experiences that may occur again and I can better assess the situation and use the appropriate communicating strategy necessary. The topic of last week’s class made me reflect about my communication style. I consider myself a passive aggressive because it depends on the situation how I react to people. Growing up, I was more aggressive especially with my family. The aggressiveness in me reacts saying harmful stuff to people I care about and when I release the anger I regret the words I said. I remember many situations where I threw things because I was really mad and then regretted breaking the stuff I did. Furthermore I was the person that slams the doors or bangs on them. My passiveness shows up its people that I am not that comfortable with for example, friends and strangers. I don’t know how they will react so I am passive with those people. I guess I have less patience with my siblings and parents. Amongst my siblings I have noticed I am more aggressive with them then other people. But there’s an exception if they really get in my nerves, which is hard to get to that point, they will really get to know who I am. I may be quiet and seem nice but people don’t want to know me mad, I will get people back worse. I have that some times I could be a sneaky person.
During the course of this semester; the variety of writing styles and essays assigned to me in my communication skills class encouraged the development of my writing skills, as well as provided me with more self-assurance in my abilities. My writing, research, and presentation abilities enhanced through practice, determination, and the understanding I gained during this course. With every single writing assignment, I learned new innovative approaches and skills, which enhanced my abilities to improve my thoughts logically, enabling me to write more clearly, and to organize my papers more effectively. At the beginning of this semester; despite the fact that I already knew the terminology MAP: message, audience, purpose; I never really understood the significance of MAP. For this reason, my writing lacked clarity, organization, and my writings appeared less focused on the topics. As a result my research papers and essays did not flow as smoothly from one passage to the next. Furthermore, I was unaccustomed with the precise procedures used when writing an essay. For instance, my previous classes before college, although requiring a reference page, did not require me to include proper citations in my writings. After evaluating the quality of my writing toward the end of the semester, I recognized vast improvements in several areas of my writing. By concentrating on the beginning stages of my writings, I could distinguish ahead of time my audience and my message. As a result, my essays are clear, and I remain on topic. In addition to that using transition phrases efficiently also helps my writing to flow smoothly. The proper use of transitions makes my writings easy to follow from one topic to the next. One of the main aspects in communicating is listening. An effective listener is one who, not only comprehends how the speaker feels but, also understands what they are stating. Building a strong connection between the speaker and the listener is one of the first steps to become a good listener. By building this connection speakers should first be in an environment with open minded listeners, it makes them feel more comfortable to state their opinions, feelings and ideas. Listeners should avoid being judgmental. The individual does not have to agree with the ideas, values or opinions of the speaker; however, to fully understand them, one must put aside their criticism. In turn, having competent communicative abilities contributes to progression and maturation in many aspects of life, with education and employment being majorly affected facets. Upon entering this course this semester, I was unaware of my lack of important communication skills interpersonally, intrapersonally, and interprofessionally. Throughout my semester in this course, I have explored many different styles and skills used in communication. I have been able to recognize my strengths and weaknesses, and I have also been able to make noticeable and satisfying incremental improvements to enhance my communication. In this paper I will reflect on the knowledge I have gained throughout this semester that has allowed me to better my communication skills; I will do this by providing examples from my life. Furthermore, I will explore how I can continue to develop my commination skills in the future.
Speaking is a natural ability given to most reluctant individuals. Since the beginning of time, it has been assumed that we have a right to speak and use words, thus we naturally begin our development of language during the early stages of live. After years of grasping and perfecting our vocabulary and language, it seems unnecessary to study the purpose of our development. Why, then, should we study “oral communication?” There are many purposes, benefits, and institutions that branch from oral communication. Of course, communication is the basis of interaction with other individuals through the use of expressions and words; however, through studying oral communication, one can take the words and expressions being used and apply them to his or her own life. After all, the most effective and useful knowledge is applied knowledge.
