Speaking is a natural ability given to most reluctant individuals. Since the beginning of time, it has been assumed that we have a right to speak and use words, thus we naturally begin our development of language during the early stages of live. After years of grasping and perfecting our vocabulary and language, it seems unnecessary to study the purpose of our development. Why, then, should we study “oral communication?” There are many purposes, benefits, and institutions that branch from oral communication. Of course, communication is the basis of interaction with other individuals through the use of expressions and words; however, through studying oral communication, one can take the words and expressions being used and apply them to his or her own life. After all, the most effective and useful knowledge is applied knowledge. Interaction is a significant part of our daily lives. Oral communication with others is inevitable, and therefore it is crucial for us to acquire the skills to do so correctly. Aside from simply stating words or expressing ideas, oral communication serves various purposes. Oral communication allows an individual to express emotions, ideas, and feelings; it gives people the ability to empower, inspire, and motivate those who listen; and it allows people to share knowledge and traditions, as well as build their self-esteem. Oral communication is also useful in leading us to new discoveries, ideas, cultures, and perspectives (O’Neill). Thus, oral communication serves several different purposes in daily life; yet each of these purposes are connected to an even larger purpose. Communication is the foundation of any society. Humans are interactive beings that must communicate in order to survive. Humans develop communication skills as infants; learning to yell when something is needed, cry when something is painful, and smile when feeling happy. As babies age they learn words; eventually learning to compose sentences allowing them to express their feelings or desires. Humans finally learn to communicate within different parts of their life with different forms of communication such as letters, spoken, visual, and more. As one ages, they become aware of the different rules of communication used with certain people and situations; such as learning to speak to a teacher in a different manner than how one talks to their friends. While doing this, people are unconsciously starting to learn how to conform in the different discourse communities. Discourse communities are an essential part of life, and learning to communicate in those communities is just as vital.

Each of us has a different foundation from which to start, but as we teach this art we will see the minds of our students expand as they develop more interest and take a more active role in their learning. Over the recent four months in Communication 1402 class, I have addressed three formal speechs and completed a number of chapters in the corresponding textbook “Communication Works”. This course of Communication aims to provide general information what public speaking is and how to address a public speaking. Recalling back the experience during the processes of completing the Speech to Imform, Speech to Persuade, and Group Presentation, I will draw a conclusion about this course and these three presentations in five aspects, comprising my previous perception of public speaking before this course; learning from the Speech to Inform; the goal and evaluation of Speech to Persuade; learning from the Group Presentation; the most important thing learned from this course.

I am majoring in Business Administration and Law, and communication is one of the biggest parts of business and law, yet communication is hardly ever taught in business classes for my major. I think that a communications class like public speaking, for example, should be not just for a college class, but taught in high school and middle school as well. I believe several classes would allow anyone to become an expert speaking. The only way to fully learn public speaking is to get up in front of people and talk to them. One can not learn public speaking from a book.

It’s not always what is being said but rather what is being done. Non-verbal communication is a big part in communication also. Non-verbal communication is depicting the body language, body movement, gestures, postures, eye contact, or either one of the five senses. .... I have a plan in order to maintain growth and development in all three types of communication. Primarily and most obviously, I must consciously practice all of the skills and knowledge I have learned. Secondly, not being afraid to ask for, and accept, constructive feedback from others will be a huge contributor to recognizing and following up with needs for improvement in any communication areas. Finally, sharing what skills and knowledge I have gained in this class with others will help to improve and maintain my own communication skills by surrounding myself with an environment filled with people who are also competent communicators. The more people who understand effective communication, the better the understanding between each person in society overall. I hope to follow through with all of these propositions to become an even better communicator in the future.
Oral language development is the foundation of learning to read and write. When we first make our big entrance into the world, our oral language starts developing. As we grow up, we hear all kinds of sounds such as words, songs, traffic and much more. Oral language is all about using spoken words to express knowledge, ideas, and feelings. It allows us to connect with others through face-to-face interactions and social media. I believe that interpersonal communication comes naturally to everyone, whether is it through verbal or nonverbal actions. However, there are different kinds of communication in which people have trouble with, but it is something that they can improve on through practice. Like everyone else, I have my own strengths and weaknesses when expressing myself and communicating to others.
I feel that obtaining good speech skills can be vital to resolving workplace issues. Becoming more direct and getting straight to the point with my speech has impacted my experiences in increase my ability of not losing my listeners interest and avoiding improper articulations by speaking or communicating clearly and effectively to obtain a good impression of his or her listener because a person only gets one time to make a first impression. We must understand the power of the tongue. Changing our words can change our situations.
