He is the only person who has made him feel shame and dissatisfied with his political career. He wants Socrates to leave so that he can speak freely and get admiration. “Before him alone I feel ashamed, for I am conscious that I cannot contradict him and say it isn’t necessary to do what he bids, but when I leave him, I am worsted by the honors of the multitude. So I desert him and flee, and when I see him I am ashamed by my own arrangements. ” But then again, Alcibiades thinks he could gratify Socrates and pursue good things and some wisdom from him by using his youthful beauty. Throughout all the years, he never could find anyone as wise as himself, and all he did was make enemies searching. These enemies are now his accusers, and they accuse him of spreading evil doctrines, corrupting the youth, and not believing in the Gods. Throughout the speech, Socrates continues to shoot down every accuser and it is evident that he has done no wrong. Eventually, one of his accusers states that he must be doing something strange and that he wouldnt be that famous if he were like other men. Socrates did not live a very public life unlike most people at that time. His thoughts of being virteous had more to do with examining yourself and becoming a better person and in that way, you benifit society. The Tragedy of Alcibiades in Plato's Symposium. In Symposium, a selection from The Dialogues of Plato, Plato uses historical allusions to demonstrate Alcibiades’ frustration with both social expectations for the phallus and his inability to meet these expectations. Alcibiades’ inability to have a productive sexual relationship effectively castrates him and demonstrates the impotence caused by an overemphasis on eroticism. The tragedy of Alcibiades is that he realizes he is unable to gain virtue through sexual relationships and will therefore be forced to remain mortal, yet he is unable to alter his condition.
Many people have gone through their lives conforming their beliefs and practices for the sake of fitting in or for the happiness of others, but Socrates was not one of these people. In “The Apology” Plato shows Socrates unwillingness to conform through a speech given by Socrates while on trial for supposedly corrupting the youth of Athens and believing in false gods. Although the title of the dialogue was labeled “The Apology,” Socrates’ speech was anything but that, it was a defense of himself and his content along his philosophical journey. At no time during the trial was Socrates willing to change his ways in order to avoid punishment, two reasons being his loyalty to his God and his philosophical way of life.
For these two articles that we read in Crito and Apology by Plato, we could know Socrates is an enduring person with imagination, because he presents us with a mass of contradictions: Most eloquent men, yet he never wrote a word; ugliest yet most profoundly attractive; ignorant yet wise; wrongfully convicted, yet unwilling to avoid his unjust execution. Behind these conundrums is a contradiction less often explored: Socrates is at once the most Athenian, most local, citizenly, and patriotic of philosophers; and yet the most self-regarding of Athenians. Exploring that contradiction, between Socrates the loyal Athenian citizen and Socrates the philosophical critic of Athenian society, will help to position Plato's Socrates in an Athenian legal and historical context; it allows us to reunite Socrates the literary character and Athens the democratic city that tried and executed him. Moreover, those help us to understand Plato¡¦s presentation of the strange legal and ethical drama.
Rhetoric, or oratory, is a knack and not an art. The statement is made by Socrates and is the main argument in Platos Gorgias. Although oratory is the point of the discourse between Socrates and Gorgias and Polus, Socrates is careful to align oratory with other activities that knacks such as cooking, beauty-culture (i.e., cosmetics), and sophistry (i.e., popular lecturing) sophistry together to expound the importance of intention when defining art. Arts are activities that are learned through study for the benefit of people’s body and soul. A knack, according to Socrates, is a natural aptitude that is perfected though routine to catch “fools with the bait of ephemeral pleasure” (30). Therefore, knacks are dishonorable and bad, because

In his defense, Socrates claims over and again that he is innocent and is not at all wise, “…for I know that I have no wisdom, small or great.” Throughout the rest of his oration he seems to act the opposite as if he is better than every man, and later he even claims that, “At any rate, the world has decided that Socrates is in some way superior to other men.” This seems to be his greatest mistake, claiming to be greater than even the jury.
Although he never allowed Alcibiades to fall into flattery from Socrates himself, Alcibiades became accustomed to misleading luxury and pride stemming from his popular image with the people that resulted in flattery and pleasures. Plutarch wrote, "Yet sometimes he would abandon himself to flatterers, when they proposed to him varieties of pleasure and would desert Socrates; who, then, would pursue him, as if he had been a fugitive slave" (262). Socrates yearned for Alcibiades to taste true honor and real virtue. Although he was closer to the side of virtue than vice, Alcibiades had not perfected all the virtues. Socrates saw much more in him and transformed the misguided pleasures, making Alcibiades "humble and modest, by showing him in how many things he was deficient, and how very far from perfection in virtue"
Because Socrates’ ideologies and beliefs went against the cultural expectation of Greek society at the time, he was prosecuted for being impious and corrupting the minds of Athenian youth. In the words of Euthyphro, being pious is doing what pleases the Gods. The reason Socrates was being accused of being impious was due to the fact that he did not believe in or acknowledge the Gods that the city of Athens believed in. His accusers also believed that he introduced new deities which was seen as corrupting the youth. This is because Socrates believed that Athenians did not truly understand the meaning of piety themselves. That’s why in the text Euthyphro, Socrates questions Euthyphro what is pious or impious. There are times in every mans life where our actions and beliefs collide—these collisions are known as contradictions. There are endless instances in which we are so determined to make a point that we resort to using absurd overstatements, demeaning language, and false accusations in our arguments. This tendency to contradict ourselves often questions our character and morals. Similarly, in The Trial of Socrates (Plato’s Apology), Meletus’ fallacies in reason and his eventual mistake of contradicting himself will clear the accusations placed on Socrates. In this paper, I will argue that Socrates is not guilty of corrupting the youth with the idea of not believing in the Gods but of teaching the youth to think for themselves by looking to new divinities.
Alcibiades’ speech played a fundamental role in the Symposium because it was different from the other five speeches given. It serves as a spiritual copy completing Socrates’ speech because he compares Socrates as Eros since they share the same features. It seems that Alcibiades portrays Eros in a way it’s easier for readers to grasp and understand. It seems that people would reject the idea of love if it does not involve sex but rather a philosophical touch to it. Living in a democracy, everyone is exposed through television and other various forms of media everyday to numerous trials by jury. Usually they are rarely given a second thought, but every once in a while along comes a specific trial which captures the attention of the entire country. This goes the same for trials throughout centuries in our past. Although they did not have the same forms of media as in this, modern era, there were still specific trials in which everyone knew about. One trial that stands out is the one against the great philosopher Socrates. Accused of corrupting the youth, being an atheist, and believing in other gods, Socrates faced trial by jury. The early forms of democracy were not as sophisticated and complex as they are now. The outcome of the trial was that Socrates was found guilty and sentenced to be put to death by hemlock poisoning. The question is whether Socrates was truly guilty or just another person fallen to the early form of democracy of a people who were possibly jealous and afraid of Socrates. However, by understanding Socrates intentions, it is clear that he was in fact innocent of the above charges, and was wrongly accused and executed.
(37) The problem is that many of the citizens of Athens who wanted Socrates dead, lacked that emotional intelligence and thought highly of themselves. So of course they become defensive when Socrates sheds light on the idea that they may be wrong. Whether Socrates is portrayed correctly or not, he certainly was a great man. His contribution to western thought cannot be denied. For even if his teachings were different from what they are known to be at present, his influence on Plato is immense. And so, it is no small matter to describe the tragic passing of such a man as Socrates was and remains for philosophy today. Yet in all the indignation which is expected to arise at the death of Socrates, the panache with which he departs is captured excellently in Plato's “Apology.” Specifically, at the end of the "Apology," Socrates makes a very important statement that has had great impact on philosophy ever since its original proclamation. The Stoics in particular have taken this to be the cornerstone of their ideology. The statement made is that "you must regard one thing at least as certain—that no harm can come to a good man either in his life or after his death,” (Plato 100). The following examination focuses therefore on a brief explanation of the circumstances which lead to this statement being made by Socrates, as well as a closer look at why he thinks this to be the case.
