Revealing Hamlet Shakespeare is famous for creating his characters to have such dynamic personalities. Why is Hamlet agreed to be one of the most diverse and complex characters Shakespeare has written about? In the play Hamlet, Shakespeare illustrates Hamlet as indecisive and unpredictable through his relationships, actions and inactions, and state of mind. Hamlet and Ophelia’s wavering relationship reveals that Hamlet is unpredictable at times. When Hamlet fights with Ophelia he asks “Why wouldst thou be a breeder of sinners?” (3.1.123-124) and then warns her that all men “are arrant knaves” (3.1.130) and to “believe none of” (3.1.130) them. Hamlet is demanding Ophelia to not have children so she does not risk having arrogant and vengeful sons like himself. Before the play starts, Hamlet asks Ophelia “shall I lie in your lap?” (3.2.102) and continues to discuss “country matters” (3.2.106). Hamlet’s indecisiveness emerges when he is evaluating both sides of murdering Claudius. Hamlet decides to kill Claudius while he is “a-praying” (3.3.74) but he rethinks the situation and realizes that he will only be “revenged” (3.3.85) if he kills him while he performs “some act that has no relish of salvation in’t” (3.3.92-93).
