The Love of Ophelia
It is never easy to see into a person’s heart and find their true emotions, especially when their feelings are intentionally masked to give off a different impression. Hamlet, the prince of Denmark, attempts to mask specific emotions throughout the play. He tries to give off the impression that he is insane when he is near his murderous uncle and other characters because he doesn’t want them to suspect his plan of revenge. However, he silently expresses his love towards the sweet Ophelia, his girlfriend. At times, Hamlet must be rude and act insane towards her, but it is simply a mask to cover his true emotions instead of showing weakness. Because the prince does not know anyone else is listening to their conversation, he is expressing his true thoughts and feelings towards Ophelia. He informs her of his emotions because she needs to know, regardless of their broken relationship, he continues to care for her. Hamlet is being completely honest with Ophelia and gives her advice concerning her health and safety: “Get thee [to] a nunnery. Why wouldst thou be / a breeder of sinners? I am myself indifferent honest, / but yet I could accuse me of such things that it / were better my mother had not borne me… / Go thy ways to a nunnery” (III.i.131-134, 140). Hamlet explains how cruel it is to bring a child into the world and wishes that he couldn’t have been born. In a way, being told to go to a nunnery could sound harsh, but if Ophelia is really pregnant she will need help. Even if the world is going to end, Hamlet claims that he will continue to love Ophelia. Hamlet tells his girlfriend that even though everything around her may be false, she should that that his love is neverending.The poems and notes were only meant to be read by her, so he had absolutely no reason to lie about this emotions. Once Ophelia revealed the letters for Polonius to read, the prince decided it would be best to conceal the majority of his feelings towards her in order to protect her.
