Doctor John H. Watson is Sherlock Holmes’s friend and assistant. As a doctor of medicine, Dr. Watson is considered a smart and clever person, but when compared to Holmes, he seems to be much inferior to his friend. Doyle intentionally set the role of Dr. Watson to show how smart and intelligent Holmes is. As Doyle himself is a doctor of medicine, one may presume that Doyle himself is acting as Dr. Watson in Sherlock Holmes stories. However, after listening to an interview of Doyle in an old video clip, there is one moment that Doyle mentioned Dr. Watson as Sherlock Holmes' stupid friend. So, Dr. Watson can’t possibly be Doyle himself, because he wouldn’t think himself as a stupid person. It is more likely that he uses Dr. Watson to represent a normal prudent man who is able to obtain general information and make some investigative opinion but is unable to solve a clue. Firstly, the capability of Holmes to observe, deduct and reason based on the broad knowledge he possesses; secondly, the unique way of approaching and solving unsolved matters; thirdly, the complexity of all the stories; and lastly, the way he tells the stories that bring enjoyment, excitement, knowledge to the readers. However, the reason that Holmes is considered a hero by the readers has nothing to do with the success of the Sherlock Holmes stories as described above. The reason why Holmes became a hero of all the readers is that of what he fights for, i.e. justice. He works for the right reason, he brings justice to the society, he does not bully people.
