American Civil War

The American Civil War was a war that lasted from 1861-1865. More than three million men fought in the war and over six hundred and twenty thousand people died in that war and millions more got injured. The American Civil War was a war to free all of the slavery to have freedom for everybody. On April twelfth when Abraham Lincoln ordered a fleet to resupply Sumter, the first shots of the Civil war were fired. While the revolution of 1776-1783 created the United States, the Civil War of 1861-1865 determined what kind of nation it would be. The American Civil War started because of the states that were free and the states that were in slavery. By the year 1861 almost a million armed men confronted each other. During the war the north had more men and war materials than the south and that is why the north won the Civil War. After the war was over, the Constitution was amended to free the slaves, to assure “equal protection under the law” for American citizens, and to grant black men the right to vote. One-third of the soldiers who fought for the Union Army were immigrants, and almost one in 1ten was African American. The Union Army was a multicultural force. seven and five tenths of the soldiers were Irish, but there were even more German soldiers, ten percent, other foreign soldiers were French, Italian, Polish, English and Scottish. Black Union soldiers refused their salaries for eighteen months to protest being paid lower wages than white soldiers. Black soldiers were being paid ten dollars a month and white soldiers were being paid at least thirteen dollars a month with the white officers being paid more. Also the black soldiers had a three dollar monthly fee for clothing which drops it to seven dollars a month. So the highest paid black soldier was getting paid as much as the lowest paid white soldiers salary. In September 1864 the black soldiers finally got paid equally
