Think about who runs our world, our leaders, and how they are organized. We have different branches that are in charge of different things and have different ranks, much like Ancient Rome. Ancient Rome’s government was so influential and great, our government system today is almost exact. Rome was influenced by other empires like Greece and Egypt, but they influenced even more, so much so that our world today is still influenced. This mostly started when Julius Caesar was named dictator for life in 49-44 BC, then not long after, he was killed in 44 BC. Some may argue that the public works are what make Rome so influential because of its many colossal building projects like stadiums, palaces, and roads. Julius Caesar built a bridge across the Rhine River in 55 BC that was 1,000 ft across and 25-30 ft deep, so strong that his entire army could march across it. The spectators on the other side were so scared and fearful of Rome because of their amazing technological abilities, they ran when Caesar and his army marched across the bridge; even though their army outnumbered Caesar’s 10-1. Then afterwards, Caesar destroyed the bridge to show Rome could do go anywhere it wanted to and do anything it wanted to. While Julius Caesar was part of the government, Rome doubled in size, expanded to 3 countries, and conquered Gaul with its army of over 40,000 men. Making the Roman Empire bigger, strengthened not only the army by making it bigger and more powerful, but strengthened the empire itself by making it bigger and more well known. The Romans established a form of government called a republic. A republic is when citizens elect representatives to rule on their behalf. This is what our country’s government is based off of.
