Maslow in his theory of hierarchy of needs states that “humans need to feel love and acceptance from social groups”. Individuals engage in relations that are rewarding in both physical and non-physical ways, this concept acts as the base for the same. Social networking in digital form was born when Ray Tomlinson invented e-mail. It was never expected even by the inventors at that time that the email will radically change the way we communicate. A study done by the Radicati Group found out that in the year 2009 1.9 billion people were using e-mail and it is projected to reach 2.5 billion in the year 2014(http://email.about.com/od/emailtrivia/f/how_many_email.htm). The adoption of email acted as an ice breaker for further usage of technology by people worldwide. The first decade of this millennium saw the emergence of different social networking sites which catered to various aspects of social networking. The emergence of these sites have led to the face of social networking being completely redrawn which now represents the user in profile form, his social links, and a variety of additional services.

Today social networking sites are used as a supplementary tools for education. Students can enrol for distance learning.
