Several key events happened during WWII. However, during the early to mid 1940’s, two key historical events occurred—the Holocaust and the bombing of Hiroshima. Even though these events took place during the same time period, the purpose behind these events, the number causalities suffered and the impact on the children differed between these two historical events. First, in terms of purpose, the Nazi Holocaust and Hiroshima varied. The purpose of the Nazi Holocaust was to eliminate the non-Aryan people. The Holocaust and Nazi persecution caused many Jewish children to go into hiding. According to the story Introduction, “Some of the threatened children, such as Anne Frank in Holland went into hiding with their families.” This was the case with many of the children. According to the same article Introduction, “Other parents changed their children’s names and told them to lie about their families and what religion they practiced.” This is an example of how many families and children had to live in fear because of the Nazi party and what they might do to them. While children were being threatened and persecuted in the Holocaust, the Japanese used children for a very different task. In the article the From Hiroshima it says, “The older children work in factories. Others, like Riko, record phone messages at the army headquarters…” Children who lived in Japan at the time of the WW II were involved in the war efforts while soldiers were off fighting. Children were helping their country during the war, but many children lived in fear of American bombers. According to the story From Hiroshima the author says that Riko and Sachi, “Have stayed up all night hiding from American bombers.” The children of Japan worried what might happen if the bombers bomb Hiroshima.
