During these years, global organic product sale are approximately 20 billion dollars a year and with a roughly 20% annually increase in North American and European markets (Raynolds 725). The organic food becomes popular and more and more people start to pay attention to organic products. The aim of this paper is to give customers some suggestions when they decide to purchase the organic food and to inform these customers some basic knowledge of organic food and the organic techniques. This paper tries to present some comparisons between controversial and organic food in terms of the farming, techniques, microbial aspects and so forth. In addition, it will also indicate public and industry opinion, common concerns and customers’ preference so far. After our investigation, we find out that organic food has less pesticide residue and some organic food contain more nutritional value. However, there is a higher risk of microbiological contamination. Some nutritional value in certain food is almost the same as that in inorganic food, such as strawberries. Besides, there are some reasons that obstruct customers’ buying it, such as the high prices. Thus, by presenting these information, the customers can make better understand on organic food and thus help them develop a more health diet.
Definition
Organic food must be free of artificial food additives and processed with fewer artificial methods, material, conditions, such as chemical ripening, food irradiation, and genetically modified ingredients. Pesticides are allowed as long as they are not synthetic. The method they should use need to help foster cycling of resources, promote ecological balance and conserve biodiversity.
