Anne Knowles is the author of the novel, “The Work of Her Hands”. Published in 1983, this work teaches many about the difficult yet rewarding lifestyles of female veterinarians. Women in the area of veterinarian expertise have become more common than ever before. This novel shows the level of skill and dedication it takes to become a great success in this field.
Falling under the category of a science and life experience novel, this book catches the attention of young adults looking to read for educational purposes. For me it has done just that. I have picked up more knowledge by reading this work then I ever would have imagined. I know now that it doesn’t matter how many textbooks I study out of, or how long I try to work things out on paper, the hands on learning and real life experiences is where I will learn the most. The novel moved me in a way that made me eager to start in the veterinarian field. I am able to connect because I have had experiences relatively close to some in the book. She talks early in the book about learning how to help a ewe during parturition.pg45 I have had a lot of experience in that because I raise sheep of my own However, I got a new impression of the job. I did realize that it was not going to be an easy career before reading this book, but I came away from this novel realizing that for a female this job is more physically demanding, and that if I was interested in this career I would have to put forth more effort than other individuals because I am a smaller type of girl.
