Healthcare Vision Statement

A vision statement, as defined by Regan (2012), “doesn't tell you how you're going to get there, it does set the direction for planning. That's why it's important when crafting a vision statement to let your imagination go and dare to dream” (p. 4). I agree with this statement; a healthcare organization's vision statement should detail its passion for the people it will serve. The purpose of a vision is to exceed expectations and should be something that individuals can notice in a way that captivates them and makes them want to go towards it. Its characteristics should work in a way of pointing out that its operations are ecologically feasible and will benefit the greatest number of individuals in the most productive way.

It is important for leaders to communicate their vision. When communicating a vision a leader needs to have a broader set of abilities to motivate people to diligently achieve that vision. Productive leaders should communicate a meaningful vision to draw individuals forward but at the same time keeping people aware of the challenges that come with achieving the vision. The internal stakeholder needs to know what the vision is and when the vision is going to be accomplished. While developing the vision a leader can use it for guidance and a reminder of what to look forward to. When it comes to communicating a leaders vision its advantages benefits the people within the organization and in the community. The individuals in the organization are there daily doing the work and are accountable for making the vision a reality. Leader’s visions most importantly must appeal to the people in the community. Hartford Hospital in Connecticut developed a compelling vision statement that states their vision clearly in wanting “To be nationally respected for excellence in patient care and most trusted for personalized coordinated care” (Hartford Hospital, n.d). Hartford’s vision statement doesn’t only express what it wants to do, but what it does for their patients as well as their hopes and future goals for the organization. A well-executed vision builds trust, relationships and develops a good organization strategy. Things constantly change and with the vision being given the benefits will prove to reduce ambiguity and provide a focal point that will allow the leader to influence and motivate people to contribute and work hard towards the success of an organization (Horvath, 2016, para. 5).
