On Wednesday, September 28, 2016, I attended the University of Southern Indiana’s Health and Wellness Fair. The intention of the event was to engage the USI community in current health topics. Students and employees were informed about the different careers in the health field and what they do to prevent illness and disease. It was a great opportunity for USI students to fulfill their citizenship duties and become involved in a campus event. The main purpose of the Health Fair was to inform the community about numerous health problems in today’s society. Each individual station was designed to advise the audience about a current health concern. The stations varied from how to eat healthy, to finding the right shoe to fit your foot, to evaluating your skin for sun damage. The College of Health Professions also had a few booths of their own. The nursing students ran a blood pressure station, gave citizens their flu shots, and tested cholesterol levels. The dental hygiene students handed out free toothbrushes and warned the audience about the different mouth complications that can arise if you don’t take proper care of your teeth. Each booth had an activity that allowed students and employees to have a better understanding about the topic. A majority of these activities were hands-on activities, meaning participation was required. For example, there was a booth where four students were running a research study. They were testing whether or not listening to soothing music while observing nature reduced stress levels. The students measured the participants blood pressure levels before and after using a simulator. Pre and post surveys were completed.
