Of the many emotions humans can feel in their lives, there are two that stand out above them all: Love and hate. Love is made up of three main ingredients: passion, commitment, and intimacy. These feelings that one can feel during and emotion as intense as love can lead to a very irrational decisions or actions. I am sure that we can all recall of a crazy decision we made while in love. These decisions can follow our minds for more than a lifetime and they are all thanks to the beautiful emotion we call "love".
Hamlet tends to not show a lot of love in the play. We obviously know what he feels for her but he never really states his feelings for her. One of the things that Hamlet does to show how much he needs love is during the "to be or not to be" part of the play. In act three scene one he states, "For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,... The pangs of love,...(73)" We can see that he is in need of all of that love but sadly he is not receiving it. This is one of the reasons that Hamlet begins to have suicidal thoughts. Love is a beautiful emotion but it could have its negative effects on the body and could result in hate.
Hate is also composed of the same three elements passion, intimacy, and commitment. The human being experiences these three feelings throughout a relationship. Surprisingly, a new born can also experience anger and way the show it is crying desperately when he/she gets hungry. Love and hate are great emotions. They are comparable but also oppose each other in all ways. Love can make you go crazy, you just have to find out if it's the good or bad
The notion behind loving someone is simply very complicated and esoteric in nature. People often describe a certain chemistry, as in a certain attraction, needed between two individuals who are in love, but Barbara Fredrickson is able to coordinate the definition of love on the basis of chemicals. Barbara Fredrickson is able to provide the definition of love on the deductive reasoning based on chemistry, biology, and neurology explained in Love 2.0: How our Supreme Emotion Affects Everything we Feel, Think, Do, and Become. As Barbara explains, “With each micro-moment of love, then, you climb another rung on the spiraling ladder that lifts you up to your higher ground, to richer and more compassionate social relationships, to greater resilience and wisdom, and to better physical health.” (121).
When an emotion is believed to embody all that brings bliss, serenity, effervescence, and even benevolence, although one may believe its encompassing nature to allow for generalizations and existence virtually everywhere, surprisingly, directly outside the area love covers lies the very antithesis of love: hate, which in all its forms, has the potential to bring pain and destruction. Is it not for this very reason, this confusion, that suicide bombings and other acts of violence and devastation are committed in the name of love? A relationship cannot consist of either love or hate without there first being a close relationship between two individuals. In order for either of these emotions to be conceived within an individual, the person must first make an effort to acquire a deep understanding of the other person. Most people would say that love is a concept which will always be a mystery to man, because it is so changeable, and therefore it will always be able to fool and distort man’s thoughts. Love can both be happy and miserable, and this makes it very powerful and therefore able to control the entire behaviour of a person. Throughout a lifetime people will unavoidably experience things that will have a certain impact on the individual’s personality as well as further development. These experiences will often become memories that will follow them their entire life. This is also the case in “Mule Killers”, where a father tells his son about the memories he has of the year his son was conceived and his relationship to his father.
While there are many different emotions, there is one that stands above all others; Hate.
Love is considered a wonderful connection between two people that brings happiness to many. Although without hate no one would realize how marvelous love truly is. Does this mean hate is more powerful than love throughout the world? Hate overpowers love because there may be so much love in this world, but with the tiniest bit of hate everything could be changed in a split second. Hate is an indestructible power that will demolish anything in its way, like it did in The Coffin Quilt, by Ann Rinaldi. Roseanna McCoy and Johnse Hatfield’s love was simply not powerful enough to defeat the hate that came along with the love.
The part of Hamlet that I would like to discuss is the love story theme. I think that it is very romantic how even in today's society we do not view the other aspects of Hamlet like revenge, delay, and madness but view Hamlet as a love story. I like the part of the love story when Hamlet writes that letter to Ophelia. The poem that Hamlet wrote to Ophelia, "'Doubt thou the stars are fire, doubt that the sun doth move; Doubt truth to be a liar; But never doubt our love."' Love in Hamlet is often depressing, even though love is wanted by all. What is the point in loving somebody if they are going to die anyway? When Hamlet denies his love to Ophelia she is hurt because she had believed that she had once been loved. She finds that she has never been loved, and may never find someone to love her which hurts her. Hamlet confesses his love at the death of Ophelia. He says “I loved Ophelia. Forty thousand brothers/ could not with all their quantity of love/ Make up my sum. What wilt thou do for her?” (5.1 285-288). He does not want Ophelia to be dead because he wants her love back. Love does not always occur between a guy and girl in an intimate relationship. Love can happen between family members also. Hamlet has a strong love for his parents and is hurt to see them either die, or fall into a scheme of Old Hamlet’s brother in-law. Without love in our lives we would feel almost neglected by the world. After Hamlet’s father dies he desires his father’s love and comfort that he is unable to get. He turns to his mother after his father’s death and is turned away by her because she has other things to focus on rather than the grieving of Hamlet. Commonly, a hero is considered as a representative of morality, justice and power. Also, people have various ways to evaluate their own heroes. Especially children, as they grow up, are more likely to create their heroes who are usually brave, strong, righteous and indestructible. However, villains are the opposite side of heroes, and they are evil, demoniacal and cruel. Some of those heroes would easily turn into villains when they are trying to get revenge because their hearts are filled with hatred. The play Hamlet by Shakespeare tells the tragic story of a prince avenging the death of his father. In the play, the main character Hamlet changes from a hero into a villain through his immoral and repellant actions.
He first denies that he ever loved her, in saying “I did love you once,” to which she responds, “indeed my lord, you made me believe so,” which he denies in saying, “you should not have believed me, I loved you not!” (Hamlet 3.1). Despite this, he reveals his very human desire to love and be loved as he exclaims in several iterations that she should not marry. His desire that she not marry is a reflection of his love for her, albeit in a twisted and unorthodox manner.
Revenge almost always has the makings of an intriguing and tragic story. William Shakespeare’s Hamlet is a perfect example of how revenge unfolds and what it unveils. The play tells the story of Hamlet, the prince of Denmark. Claudius, Hamlet’s uncle, marries his mother soon after his father’s death. Hamlet greatly disapproves of the hasty marriage and suspects foul play. His suspicions are confirmed when the ghost of his father appears and tells him that Claudius murdered him. Hamlet’s father asks him to take revenge upon Claudius, and soon everything takes a drastic change. The courses of revenge throughout Hamlet surround each character with corruption, obsession, and fatality.
Shakespeare’s play “Hamlet” is a subtle reflection on the political and religious atmosphere of the early 1600’s and late 1500’s, that was dominated with conversation of the successor to the throne of England, and their religious denomination. Hamlet was written with the intention of mimicking the political world and all its machinations from treachery, duties to family, religion and country. Hamlet, begins with armies being mobilized to the threat of an invasion from Norway, helmed by Fortinbras, like the rumors that the eventual successor James VI would need to take the throne by force. Revenge is defined as the action of causing hurt or harm on someone for an injury or wrong suffered at their hands. Shakespeare’s Hamlet contains the central idea of revenge. In this story, the father is murdered, the mother marries the murderer, and the son is left to the duty of revenge (Barzilai 87). It is Hamlet’s duty to follow his father’s commands and get his revenge on his uncle, but multiple problems occur and lead to his death along with many others.
Love and hate endure to be two extremely different emotions, yet there is an exceptionally thin line between love and hate. Nevertheless people can feel both of these emotions, and also show them in more ways than one. People ponder that these feelings remain exceedingly indistinguishable and others may feel they are exceptionally dissimilar. These two emotions can be seen and shown in a way that is effortless to recognize or uncommonly difficult to discern. Love and hate feelings and emotions can be long lasting or temporary. To compare love to hate would be nonsense in view of the fact that they are two totally different emotions. Love and hate prevail, they both prove more powerful than opposing forces.
