Group Development in FIS, a Consulting Services Company Worldwide

FIS is a consulting services company that provides services worldwide; the company was involved in an off-shore project of designing training materials that required the formation of a project team, team members were expected to work effectively together and integrate their work in a successful manner that meets the team’s goals and each member has to interact with the client in order to meet its needs. Working in teams can sometimes be stressful which could affect negatively the progress of the team and its ability to succeed, according to Maylor (1996) that the Project is a set of non-repeated tasks that are executed with clear objectives and limited timescale, and that all projects have common characteristics, they are goal oriented, they have beginnings and ends, they have rules and procedures that limit its processes and their outcomes can be measured.
The FIS project team went through a formal formation process, which has affected its performance as a team; normally group’s development goes through five stages: forming, storming, norming, performing and adjourning.
Upon reaching their destination, team members went into an introductory session where they have been introduced to the client, the work already done and what is permitted and what is not. Through this session members got to know each other, they became more familiar between them about their background and behaviour which led them to form opinions and make judgments about each member. This session has contributed in creating mini-groups inside the team and these groups included members familiar with each other due to previous relationships.

...roject to succeed, the project manager have to shape goals by simplifying them in order to be clear for the team members, after setting the goals he will be able to determine the amount of resources needed for the project, them he will have to structure the team by defining each member’s role and responsibilities and establishing between them good communication in order to be effective, the project manager have to see the picture as a whole to identify and gap and to keep things moving forward, in the case of FIS the project manager has failed to prove true leadership, he also failed to motivate the team members for the sake of the project, the team members had good skills but there was lack of cooperation between them and lack of effective communication caused by conflict and biased actions of some team members Verma(1996) which affected negatively their work.
