Shawn Holton is trying to persuade his audience that colleges should go green. The author has a good variety of people to present this topic to. His audience consists of college students, teachers, environmentalist, parents, high school students, companies, and several more. When talking to this audience, the tone of the essay stays informative and well balanced. Throughout the essay, the author provides quotes and statistic from several sources.
The provides some background on the green movement. This is important because the reader needs to understand why going green is so important. The author is trying to make the reader feel more comfortable for what lie ahead. Next, he explains the definition of green as it applies to colleges.
Colleges can save money if they were to go green. The author supports his claim by providing evidence from websites and books, however, it seems a web site no longer exists or he mistyped the URL. The author mainly provides quotes and information from passage name “A Call for Climate Leadership.” When trying to check the source, it seems to be nonexistent.
