According to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), out of the fifteen million high school students across the United States, eight million of them play a sport. (Probability of Competing). However, San Diego County is considering whether or not to keep these sports. This is outrageous. Sports have a great number of positive effects on children that can help them not only for the present, but also for the future. Because of the social, psychological, and educational benefits, high school sports should not be abolished in San Diego County. One important reason that high school sports should be kept in San Diego County is the social benefits. According to Katie Couric, a study from the University of Alberta found that the loneliest kids are the ones who do not play sports (Notebook: Kids and Sports). High school sports can help kids be more social and make friends. Not only can sports help increase sociability in children, but it can also build character. Gould writes that “Leading youth development experts contend that one of the potential benefits of sports participation is the development of initiative or the ability to set and go after goals.” High school sports help kids to learn how to set and go after goals; an important lesson for every stage in their lives. Gould also states that the “National Federation of State High School Activity Associations indicates that [high school sports] promote ‘participation and sportsmanship’” (Are High School Sports Good For Kids?). In addition to setting and achieving goals, school sports develop participation and sportsmanship and positively build character in children.
