Genetically modified foods is one of the most controversial issues around the world. GMOs (genetically modified foods) are defined as organisms that have had their genetic materials altered in a way that does not occur in nature. Doing this is supposed to improve both the quality and shelf life of most agricultural products. GMO’s have spread worldwide concern with both health and environmental effects. Both of these concerns brought up a lot of controversy. People across the world are asking questions on the environmental and health effects that these foods will have on us and the world we live in. There are both advantages and disadvantages that genetically modified foods will have on our country. Instead of cucumbers only staying fresh for a couple days, they are now staying fresh longer. A clear benefit from genetically modified foods is the improvement of the quality of food. This will save money for consumers, grocery stores and also the farmers. While GMO’s are saving money they are also decreasing the amount of waste that people think nothing of. The genetics of crops can be altered to withstand extreme weather seasons, whether it be hot, cold, wet or dry. This changes everything for the production of crops and the way that farmers can do things. Doing this we will be able to provide a sufficient amount of crops through any type of weather. Lastly, another benefit of having genetically modified foods is that we are able to increase the amount of nutrients to specific crops.
